You’re completely right with what you said at the end about him not even resembling his old self anymore. In season 1 in one of the episodes Aqua struggled with figuring out just how much of him is his old life and how much is his new life. And now in this season the manifestation of his trauma is a shadowy version of his old self, chastising him for enjoying acting and forgetting about his mission to avenge Ai. In a lot of ways his old life memories are a curse forbidding him from pursuing the path his mother wanted him to be. It’s just all really great and effective stuff, repackaging what was a super weird fantastical premise into something rich with meaning and symbolism.

Also, I always wonder if Aka Akasaka (the author) thought no one would read his story about theater kids without the murder mystery reincarnation part lol, because it honestly would work pretty well on its own imo

The series structure is set up with a fourth-wall breaking premise sprinkled with some satire. And while that's not entirely uncommon to manga and anime (there's been plenty of other stories that deal with the same subject matter), the authors here have leaned into it, especially so with this theatre/play arc, to use the meta-fictional events and behaviors of the play characters as metaphors for the characters that play them. We have characters and events in this series as a metaphor for the real-life entertainment industry in Japan, and this arc has them acting as characters in a fictional work that metaphorically mirrors their inner psychology and their roles in the story. Layers deep, indeed!
