FMAB Ep 19

Wow this is so much better in sub

FMAB Ep 19

Comments

yeah, i only heard(read on a forum i think, forgot the title) about 1 anime that somebody had the opinion that the sub(the original voice acting) was so bad, that its reccomended watching the dub instead. and i i remember they said luckily the dub was god too

tudos4

this is the first time I've seen someone dislike the dub even a little so this is shocking😅 no complaints here tho to each their own as long as ur enjoying it

I always prefer content in it's original language, be it English, Japanese, Spanish, etc, even though I have no issues with people who prefer dubs at all. It's hard to describe, but I honestly feel that material written/created in a specific language has much more meaning and intensity in that particular language, even things such as jokes, emotional moments or intense situations are felt much more "vividly" in that specific language. And, as a linguist, I cannot help but admire works with its original language, because it carries an entire cultural, stylistic and personal background that is almost impossible to fully convey when localized, regardless of how good that localization may be. Tl;DR, I always prefer subs, so I'm happy with the switch.

Unbeknownst Man

lol onii chan ftw

kinetic98

Anyone that says the dub is BETTER - you're either telling from pure nostalgia or being used to dub in anime. No matter how good the dub is - and this one is pretty good, not the best, but good - NOTHING can beat the original. Even tho FMA is one of those shows that suits it. For me MHA and Black Lagoon have much better dubs than Brotherhood.

PennyQuill

but it's true

PennyQuill

no it's not.

PennyQuill

HOW can you prefer it to sub?! it's unreal to me

PennyQuill

yeah but like regardless, Tony isn't vibing with it so it doesn't matter how good one scene is in dub, its more important he watches the version that he enjoys.

Yuyu

i watched dub first and hated it after i watched it in sub. people need to understand that subs are just more liked overall no matter what the series is, so its most logical just to keep watching sub even if people are against it

Tauren Rogue

quality movie reference

DrumRollTony

Well that's just like, your opinion man

Freariose

Ooooooo

DrumRollTony

It's better than ditchn the show tho 👀

DrumRollTony

I won't lie I'm pretty sad about ditching the dub, I think it's pretty fantastic. However, I get not vibing with it as well. When I got my friends to watch this show they didn't seem to enjoy the dub as much as I did either, ah well. It's a shame too because I think the english VAs hit it out of the park this episode.

Freariose

Ok but the Mustang vs Lust scene is legit better in the dub. They killed it

N

By the way, you seemed confused about how Lust was able to regenerate after Mustang ripped the stone out of her chest. She was saying the stone IS her. So, taking the stone out of her body wasn't taking a battery out of an electronic device. It was like ripping the root off of a plant. Except the plant is so hardy that instead of dying, the plant started growing back out of the root, growing around the arm you were holding the root with 😅 I'm sure there's a better metaphor, but I couldn't think of one 🙈

Alberto Munoz

People at the start recommended him to try the Dub as the Dub for FMAB is highly rated, but it seems that he preferred the Sub in the end. He also started Code Geass in Dub, but restarted in Sub after around 4 episodes as the Dub was of poor quality.

SKAOG

The dub will always hold a special place in my heart as the original way that I experienced this story. That said, I can understand wanting to experience it in a way that you feel makes it more enjoyable to you, and I do agree that for someone that doesn't have nostalgia value from having previously watched the dub when they were young it does sound very cheesy at certain points. I say watch it however you enjoy it and don't let our opinions influence that.

Y0m0three

Great to see you enjoy the different soundtracks. I always thought fmab is one of the best when it comes to osts

SinuHan

Love the Dub way more but you do you

Vincent S Deluca

LET'S GO my wish came true after 19 episodes!!! I had a feeling you'd switch, though it was much later than for Code Geass. Going to definitely watch every episode now, as I couldn't watch the dub seriously even though it's probably the best dub I've heard! The story is top tier, so as long as you finish, I'm sure the dub lovers won't mind as that's the most important part of your reactions.

SKAOG

as much as i loved the dub, you couldn't have picked a better ep to make the switch to the preferred side. colonel mustang so badass

cue

I genuinely think the dub is purely nostalgia for most watchers here (I speak as one of them lol), in an era of terrible and awful dubs this was considered good in that times lineup, but by todays standards most definitely does not hold up to the same bar. So I definitely agree that you should trust your gut and watch the version that feels right to you. imo jp dub is almost always better/safer anyways, just bc its the original and from what Ive seen the jp voice acting for anime is just almost always so on point and usually gets direct feedback/input from mangakas of the show etc so, totally worth watching in sub.

Yuyu

Dub is nowhere near original

Tyler Bowler

yay I can watch now lol

Lulu

defintely second this! well said

Yuyu

Whatever choice you make, I admire the fact that you made your own choice without worrying too much about what we all think. The most important thing in reacting is being able to share the joy of watching our faves with a charismatic person who's having fun. So have fun! I also love the Japanese dub so this is great for me, but for anyone who prefers the English dub - it's still FMA, it's still Tony, let's just all have a great time ey? :D

I personally prefer the dub (the comments from people shitting on it seem unnecessary). That said, you should just roll with whatever is going to be the best viewing experience for you. I’m here for the story and characters, and if those come across better to you in sub then should def do that

Sam

This is one of the few I watch in dub. This episode is cool bc the dub actors for Mustang and Lust are married irl.

IGTrumpy

Thank god. The anime itself is not great at adaptating the "lighter" moments of the manga (1 panel jokes turned into 30s jokes), but the english dub adds a huge layer of cheesiness on it. "Truth within the truth" LMAO, glad to see you make this choice.

Refia

The FMA Brotherhood subs are hardcoded because they just uploaded an already subbed release of the show rather than the subs that would normally be added on top of a release in different languages. Just something you'll encounter with older shows leading to things like older yellow subtitles. (But a small price to pay imo)

Nick K

Dont know if you ever mentioned it but what makes you decide between dub or sub when starting?

Nusutto

I love the sub!

Jesse Miller

I am glad u made the switch. As other people have already said if changing to sub elevates ur viewer experience then for sure it’s a good idea.

Parampreet Singh

"66 is now 33" really got me man, glad you're enjoying the show a lot more with the original dub!

Zach Harding

The only thing I prefer in the dub is Hawkeye and Mustang. I really enjoy their English for some reason

Avalon

Btw,I don't know if it was mentioned but Edward's VA in the sub is the same one as Hange from Attack on Titan. They're both kind of ''nerd researchers'' so it's cool.

Lixien

Yea I felt like those comments were outta pocket tbh

DrumRollTony

I don't believe the sentiment of "the subtitles are badly translated." I've seen the show in dub and sub, I don't feel like theres anything important or not conveyed that would impact the story. Especially not enough for you to sit through something you don't like. Personally I prefer the sub more, as it's how I first discovered it but I wouldn't worry at all about missing story elements with the switch. I really look forward to the rest of your reaction to this show!

Sean

Gluttony (the big guy who was trying to eat the sniper) and the scientist guy from Code Geass have a really similar voice in japanese, I wonder if its the same voice actor.

Hermit

You're on the right side of history for this decision Tony, that dub was getting unbearable to listen to.

Brandon3681

Kidding of course 😅 Whatever you choose is fine by me.

Jet Man

👌

DrumRollTony

Obviously, the only REAL way to watch this show is in German dubbing with Arabic subtitles.

Jet Man

This is a show that most people generally find to be good sub and dub so either works.

Anthony Cano

I prefer subs myself, so this is a good development for me.

Alberto Munoz

I think it’s fine if you wanna continue with Sub, whatever makes you enjoy the show more is most important. I personally prefer the dub but a large part of that comes down to the script being better than the sub translation (imo), so if you can’t stomach the voices it’s completely fair to switch to Japanese.

AussieBoy

sub ftw

Edgar Lopez

Whatever works best for you! Would be an incredible shame to drop this show over something that can be fixed like this! It’s too good overall for that.

Andrew Muggleton

Sub will always be superior

Szayel H

yeah, I love Hawkeye and Mustang’s dub

Chelly

I think another reason I prefer the dub is the localization on the subs is a bit wonky to me. If the subtitles for the dub were overlaid on the Japanese voice acting I think I’d probably enjoy the subs even more.

Vincent G

Bradley also has an amazing VA but yeah agree that if it’s a better experience for him he should just do the sub

Sam

Damn, some great dub performances on this episode too. No shade tho! If it keeps you watching the show then Im all for it!

Vincent G

Finally. I enjoyed Armstrongs dub performance but that is a sacrifice I can take for the pleasure of my ears

Jack Allen

Yea but not the timbre of voice saying it. I was at my max

DrumRollTony

Now no "brother..." but a lot of "oni-chan..."

d_swordfish

I really prefer the dialogue in dub, and even some VA performances as well (tho they can be hit or miss like always). That’s why I’d always recommend dub over sub in this instance to people. But it’s up to you, if you think this will help you enjoy it then go for it 👍

Chelly

I normally prefer the Sub on most shows, but I usually get attached to whatever voice I hear first. I can’t switch after hearing and getting used to a set of VA’s. It feels almost fake or like I’m watching a cheap recreation, regardless of the quality of work. Even though this is my favorite show, I probably won’t keep watching these reactions. I hope you enjoy it as much as many others do. The back half of this show feels like it’s right up your alley.

Ivan Parra

If that is how you like it bro. Like selecting a bass for the occasion.
