FMAB Ep 18

Hey wait a minuteeee

FMAB Ep 18

Comments

I dunno, I think it's fantastic from the start. I like it even more once the mystery around the truth really starts rolling, but I really enjoy the early episodes. While Ed and Al aren't my favorite characters, I still really like them. Maybe my appreciation for it is colored because I watched the original FMA and then later watched FMA:B so I've kinda gotten the best of both worlds? Hard ask for someone just getting into though.

Freariose

Rockbelle is Winry's last name. With so many names being thrown out every episode and Tony only watching two a week alongside a slew of other shows, It would be easy. Have absolutely no clue who the rockbelles are. It was also stated that they both died in the war and were medics, so that detail is extremely easy to miss for someone who isn't actively taking in subtle details and information.

18 episodes of people talking about intentional immaturity and "it will get better soon/later!"

A little of topic but I don't know anything about music but I just love how you describe and appreciate the songs, and I'm pretty sure I start watching you channel constantly after watching your reaction to this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOLRy9JR_so

The first animated Fullmetal Alchemist is much darker and more serious. Although it doesn't follow the manga as closely as Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood.

Natasha Crandall

Yeah with this one, I think it’s sort of a “trust the process” type of situation before stuff takes off in the second half

Sam

Yea I do agree with that. Could just be the script or the writing. Haven’t watched the sub version in a while so I could just be remembering wrong.

Parampreet Singh

Everything is less cringy when you read it vs hearing it. Is the voice the problem or the writing?

Plz Help

I thought u would say it feels more childish. I believe it’s mainly the voice acting. Not that I am an expert in this but the delivery of sentences does make a huge difference in Japanese, it sounds less cringy.

Parampreet Singh

anyone with reasonable critical thinking and can accurately pick up on context clues knows its scar after that scene, its absolutely not a spoiler and frankly should be known after this episode

Cassii

I think it's probably a matter of preference but just watching a bit of the subbed version of this episode it feels less "childish" to me. I think aspects of the dub are just a bit hammy to be honest. Ed's character still does the same things and the words are generally the same but the delivery sounds less played up in the sub when he's having an outburst. Also just a separate "old anime viewer" gripe but official subs and captions are so weird about not translating on screen text sometimes you'd think they weren't official, but back in my day fansubs were exhaustively thorough and cleanly done and they did it all for free just for the love of anime. /rant

While true i think it kinda ruins the reveal down the line if you haven’t picked up on it. Instead of Tony learning with the characters he sees it via a comment

Jack Allen

i like the vocal soundtrack that plays until 5:24, but i haven't been able to find its name, which sucks

SKAOG

Yeah, it's the voice acting. Japanese comedic timing is super different to english, and these lines are already quite childish so the voice actors have to try really hard to make their own comedy out of the lines and what's on screen. IMO it's a huge departure from the original.

Isaac Noël

is this not a spoiler? idk if that has been stated yet. Edit: Nvm, ive just watched the epsiode, they've hinted at it, though anyone not paying attention probably won't pick up on it since it's still subtle and not explicit.

SKAOG

Well said.

Jet Man

Things are definitely about to kick up into high gear in the next few eps so the cringe will be pulled back a bit

Jack Allen

the immaturity is intentional on the magakas part, mainly because they wanted to highlight Eds growth and maturity throughout it. This is kind of the key turning point where that immaturity starts to dial back a little, but you are right. The show is considered a shounen (geared for younger male audience) (and its age + the dub definitely has a lot to do with the 'cartoon' feel to the writing for sure) But its totally understandable fmab is already two decades old and it shows, especially when you come from watching more recent anime as your introduction to anime initially- most of us probably remember fmab through tinted lenses of this being our earliest introduction to anime.

Yuyu

This is my favorite anime, but not the best anime. It’s been the highest rated anime for almost two decades now, but looking at it now, it’s definitely more to do with nostalgia. I will say it starts out more immature but that will change as the story progresses. I feel like one of the show’s strengths is the show grows in maturity as the characters do, a lot like Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Ivan Parra

For those of you who didn't understand that exchange between Ed and the ishvalans. Long story short, Scar is the guy who killed Winry's parents.
