Sound Euph S3 Ep 12

Massive oops on upload order. This is a very busy week IRL with music camps.
Yesterday was a sleep-deprived day and things got funky on the PC.

Yep I preferred the second player too haha. But good to see the expert angle, as always!

Chris Hee

Definitely keep playing. Having arts in your life balances it out

Hey Tony. I just wanted to say I really appreciate these music reactions. Being a musician in a very low income family, the passion you have for music makes me want to keep pursuing it, in spite of the struggles. It's really nice to see someone who understands the struggles of a musician in todays world

This is interesting BUT it's just a transcription that someone did. It's just the notes. There are not markings included that would normally be there. I need to a the original music that would include dynamics, articulation and phrasing related to make a real assessment.

DrumRollTony

Same here (trombonist that has done extensive euph doubling throughout both high school & college). I think the difference is that the first player sounded like they were responding to the trumpet; matching her style and phrasing, etc. while the second player sounded like a second soloist. Both were phenomenal, so it probably just comes down to which approach you prefer the duet to take. Knowing that, it makes sense to me why Reina would pick the first one. She's always been big on absolute unity.

That judging is cool for lesser events, but for nationals, there is a reason why accomplished staff picks. Been there before. Know when to gimmick and when not to. Where I come from, we check egos at the door or you get hit by the door. Lol

It's interesting to see so many people think that the second player was better. I was a euphonium player through school, and for some reason, the first player felt like the better performance. I don't really have extensive musical training, so I can't really explain my instinctual reasoning as to why. It just felt right.

You can still find the link around on Reddit if you really wanna join (or I can link it) Yeah seems like Bluecoats are on a run this year, they got one of my fav closer with Phantom Regiment

古河渚

I want to join that discord 🤣 I want to see Bluecoats win BUT I'll have a better informed opinion in a few weeks

DrumRollTony

I watched the whole show with my mum while visiting her because she was in a string orchestra when she was growing up, and both her and me chose the second one as well. Not based in any actual logic cause neither of us had the knowledge or experience to know for sure but just based on instinct. So it was really cool to see you picking the second one as well and also being able to explain how it was ever so slightly different.

AussieBoy

We talked about this one a lot in the hibike discord server lol, we don't have the sheet but most concluded that the decision was made from the moment at 16:33-16:36 (2nd player, 15:10-15:13 for the 1st). Funnily enough a lot of us chose the 2nd player for the reasons you listed, some even recognised who was playing. Also who's winning DCI this year in your op ?

古河渚

It would be great if you record a video comparing both performance according to the actual music score and sharing your decision process. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8li6TLQbT7c

Michie sensei likes to put a tough front but she's a softie. Love her.

I 100% agree that this is better. I was preemptively disappointed, because I was sure Kumiko would win. I thought the story would have its cake (the best player should play!) and eat it too (but the protagonist everyone wants to win is the best, don't worry about it). But it really stuck to its guns. The best player should play, even if it's NOT the protagonist. It's awesome.

Alberto Munoz

Interesting i didn’t know that in the novel kumiko wins. I like this decision a lot more tho

Parampreet Singh

sm people hated this major divergence from the novel(kumiko wins the soli/no contest&voting) but goddamn ,this is so much better Hibike's major theme of "as the seasons of life changes people come and go, but you always retain a piece of their impact." From asuka to kumiko (even her song "sound! Euphonium" is passed down) , to liz and the bluebird nozomi(liz) introducing mizore(bluebird) to band and eventually mizore flies with the music and goes to music school. even taki's wife to taki (the whole river styx analogy, & the impact of teaching will remain on students) And finally here , Reina's desire to be the best , her desire for a meritocracy, her upsettedness at losing a competition... all of this is what she has imparted onto kumiko...Even if life takes them in different paths , Kumiko wants to treasure it, EVEN at the cost of her losing her Soli part
