Your end tangent about critiquing "bad music" and being reluctant makes me think of Ratatouille at the end where the food critic says that even with all he's ever written, the critique that someone gives is worth basically nothing compared to what is produced by people who actually make things. It only really feels right to shit on things if they're put out in bad faith rather than an earnest effort.
