Dark & Moody Pro Tips: THE LIGHTING TRIANGLE

I'm writing my big nerdy powerpoint presentation for my dark and moody workshop this Sunday and I thought I'd share this slide + the notes that go with it. Because this is something that I've never seen talked about by another photographer - and having this visualized changed how I interpreted light and lit my subjects!

We often think of lighting our subject as the relation to where our subject is to their light source. but theres a third thing that often gets overlooked when we're considering lighting: YOU!

Your placement matters. Where you are in relation to the other two points of your triangle matter (like, A LOT).

This is probably one of the most important things to consider when lighting for dark and moody - you can change the points in this triangle and DRASTICALLY change the look of an image/pose.

For example:

*okay yeah I know the one on the left is technically not a straight line, not a triangle, but there's three points of considering SOO I'm still calling it a triangle mmmkay

My challenge for you! The next time you're doing a shoot, think about your lighting triangle. Maybe try moving just one part of your triangle and see how much of a difference that one point can make. No need to change all three things for diverse images and a gallery full of variety. You could shoot one pose and make it drastically different by just changing the direction or your light, or your relation to your light + subject.

With love,

M xx
