Perhaps the most common request I get is some kind of Quest Tracker / Task Tracker. I've been very resistant, because I feel it really easily ends up as a 'laundry list' of tasks to complete, making the players miss the fun in exploring the world and encountering organic events.
Having said that, I'm encountering enough people who're playing from Walkthroughs because they're lost, or want to make sure they catch them all. At that point you're already getting spoilers, so from the point of view of organic game design, it's even worse :) The final nail in the coffin of resistance is that this lets me do the initial onboarding better; task list are great for making tutorials, and I have seen people occasionally get stuck in the initial 15 minutes of gameplay, which is never cool.
So, I set out to make a Quest system. I wanted something that evolves over time, which supports multiple concurrent sub-tasks, and which lets me inject a bit of personality and fun into the task. We'll see how I feel about it once it's in.
Apart from that, it's the first time I try to narrate one of these; it's obviously quicker to do it like this than assembling it in AfterEffects, and allows me to give more information. What's your thoughts on this format? Let me know in the comments below.
