Steins gate has always been great, never had an issue with the first episodes. Gripped instantly since episode 1.
its been in the top rated anime on MAL and other anime DB's for as long as i can remember for good reason. Im glad we are going to be ticking another generational classic off the list!

Steins Gate is an adaptation of a visual novel, so the harem vibes are sort of "inherited" from the original work.

Ironically, there was a time when High School DxD was a somewhat popular gateway anime.

Glad to hear that you're enjoying the humor and Slice of Life aspects in the anime you've seen so far
I don't know why this is coming as a surprise to me, considering you've consistently told us this in the reviews (and the fact you enjoy One Piece should have made it clear you can roll with the more wacky stuff lol)
I think a possible reason why anime that showcase these aspects haven't been recommended as much is because it's almost an unspoken rule to recommend 'safer' shows to 'beginners'. This doesn't mean that these shows aren't excellent of course, but just that they're relatively easy to get into even without a familiarity with the medium (or if you think all anime is about catgirls).
Shows like AoT and Vinland Saga are (usually) more familiar ways to step into this world. It is funny to see people's first anime be something like Jojo's though...

You should remember Jukki Hanada, the main scriptwriter for this anime. Basically everything he touches is gold.

So tough to comment on Steins;Gate without saying too much! I'll err on the side of caution and keep things limited!
On the Slice of Life elements: If I am honest, if I remember correctly in the early days of my first watch of Steins;Gate it was actually the character dynamic which gripped me to an even greater extent than the time travel mystery did! That said, whilst I watch a very broad range of anime, my core constituency is Slice of Life, Romance, RomComs, and character dramas, so to that extent this is perhaps just me being on-brand. That said, I can only echo your comments on the character dynamic so far and I actually think that the time spent to develop the interpersonal relationships provides a significant boost to the time travel mystery, as, whilst that is undoubtedly interesting in it's own right, I find myself growing to care about it because I have grown to immerse myself in these characters and their story.
Something I notice about the whole visual language of Steins;Gate, I've always thought that there's something quite cold, perhaps surgical, about the visual presentation of these episodes. The use of empty space, washed-out colours... It's not a constant, but it is noticeable. Maybe a not dissimilar vibe of many scenes from something like "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". I think it quite effectively guides the viewer towards the headspace of Okarin, in his confused and isolated situation.

Damn, hate ? Quite surprised to hear that. Once I’m done with it, It’ll be interesting to learn what made people hate the start, and which elements specifically, cause hate is rather strong.

As some other people already stated peeps need a loto d tries for this show. I did need 4 tries to actually finish the show. A lot of people really hate the start of Steins Gate. I was 100% sure you will enjoy this but for most people its hard to get through. Though on my first rewatch a lot changed obviously haha

The story seems good so far, I just don’t understand why Pitou works at a maid cafe

On the list 👌🏼 I do hope to get to that before it’s all said and done.
I believe Autosave is covering that at the moment.

Oh Steins;Gate was always a lock for me, it was only a matter of when it would happen. The heavy time travel elements is what really drew me to it, as I do have a strong grasp on those mechanics. Now that I’ve experienced it, there’s so much more to like about it as well👌🏼

I get hesitant about recommending Steins Gate because it has a heavy lean into early 2000s otaku/online culture which can be a bit jarring if you're not familiar with it, and then the heavy time travel elements.
It's cool that you're enjoying the slice of life + comedy elements, as well as making references to time travel mechanics and John Titor and world lines etc. in the episode 1 discussion. Makes me excited for the rest of the series.
I never watched Doctor Who, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised that someone who covered Doctor Who for years on their channel knows a lot about time travel :P

Stop. He might actually do this and get sucked into a vortex of his own content!

Do you ever go back and listen to some of your own discussions after finishing a series btw? I think with Steins;Gate you might find it cool to see what ideas/predictions you had at the start and how/if they adjusted over time.

Holy! Over an hour discussion already! Filmbuff is cooking!
If you're interested in some unique anime with harem elements, great characters and banter between them then Monogotari is one of the best in the business. One of the most unique visuals and cinematography as well. Although it's a bit heavy with local cultural references and language play.

It took me 3 tries to get past this episode on my first go-around. I rather enjoy these episodes in retrospect(this is like my 5th rewatch), but I could not stand this episode at the time
