P-47 vs P-51D

Just thought folks might be interested in this chart, taken from a pretty reliable source, on the relative ranges of the P-47 vs P-51D over time. The long and the short of it is the P-51 without tanks had the range of the P-47 with tanks, and when drop tanks came on stream properly, could easily out range it. Which shouldn't come as a surprised the Jug was shaped like a flying brick.

I have read (sometime back, so no idea of the sauce now) that the Germans figured out the P-47s drop tank thing and if possible would send up a sweep early as possible to get them to jettison the tanks prior to engaging, then run away. This would cause the Jugs to turn back early, leaving the bombers unescorted. Whether this is apocryphal, happened once by chance, happened many times, or was doctrine, I don't know.
