This month's MONTHLY NAUGHTY is "RETRO FAUX ANIME SHOW!" I'm delivering the NO-TEXT version in advance.
Recently, I've been hooked on a filter that processes illustrations to look like they're on old TV screens... It made me want to play a little make-believe game that stimulates false memories.
In my childhood, around the 1970s in Japan, the world was full of so-called "pachi-mono" or "fakes". Copyright laws were quite loose, to say the least... It was like, if something or someone was popular, they'd just make knockoffs to cash in on its popularity.
You'd see non-original "singer's own voice" cassette tapes (but with the actual singer's image) sold at festival stalls, or records of anime theme songs that, in today's copyright-conscious world, might be charitably called "covers" or "remixes", but back then were just blatant copyright infringements. There was children's merchandise with anime characters whose hairstyles were slightly different from the originals, or costumes with strange added ribbons - items that were absolutely copyright disasters. There were model kits of robots that looked similar to famous anime robots but were totally different, and so on... Every time I saw these things, I thought, "Something's not right!" It's laughable now, but it was pretty terrible back then, wasn't it? (lol)
So, I've created a piece imagining that retro era full of knockoffs. I hope you'll enjoy the sensation of "What?! Isn't this that legendary baseball anime⁉ I've been fooled!" or "Huh?! I've seen this show! I remember watching it! Is it fake⁉"
