Ed Sheeran - Subtract Album Reaction

how are you guys feeling about the newest project from Ed?

Ed Sheeran - Subtract Album Reaction

Comments

I don't know if you'll see this but I'm finally watching this cause my life is a mess right now

Drew

Listened to this after his recent Zane Lowe interview, and it broke my heart! Such a good song though

Can I just say my favorite thing about your reactions is how honest you are while still being so respectful. I think subtract is Ed’s best album lyrically but definitely does feel a bit same sounding throughout. I think it’s the kind of album where you take what you need from it. I’m not sure if that makes sense, but just based on what’s happening in life different songs from the album will end up hitting harder - even if the album as a whole falls a bit flat.

I'm really surprised at your reaction, because I thought this would be an album for you. But I appreciate your honesty. I find it really interesting how different this album can be received. For me, it's the best thing Ed has put out since Divide (I didn't connect with equals at all). And while I can see that it is a lot of the same theme/vibe through the album, that also makes it very cohesive, which I love. Maybe it's also a language thing. Because english is not my first language I can listen to it and not focus on the heaviness of the lyrics if I don't want to😄

I liked this album, not as much as Divide or Equals though. After watching the documentary on Disney+ I appreciate it more. But I really, really love watching your reactions. You are so genuine in your reviews and it’s so nice to listen to music with someone who sometimes ”get” the lyrics more than I do. Thank you Caitlin.❤️

Would love if you reacted to all the music videos he put out for the album, it’s meant to be a visual album so each song has a real music video!

Noelle Dixon

yes!!! i entirely agree with all of this! like i respect his decision to put out a project that he felt he needed to in order to tell the story he wanted to tell, im just not that into the music itself nor do i have a desire to relisten to it. and i actually cut out a section of my outro where i talked about that exact thing regarding folklore! so i do still hope this albums grows on me more! ♥️

Okay comment #3 lmao after watching the reaction cause I commented before watching before 😅 Yes I definitely agree with your conclusion even if I disagree with your skips lol (I love Dusty, I think it's so cute and sweet and I love songs that give me warm fuzzies), sonically it's very samey throughout the album so while I understand completely the need for a creative to use their medium as an outlet for their emotions I think maybe Aaron Dessner or someone should have been like "look, I get that you need to write this, but for an album it's getting real repetitive and maybe we should break it up a lil energetically." Like I wrote a lot of poetry while I was processing but if I actually published it as a collection it would be a very boring repetitive collection and I'd be looking back on it cringing lol I do think it's a lovely album, but it's too sad to be good if you want a consistent, chill vibe, and it doesn't offer enough variety to listen to the whole thing if you want anything besides chill. I do appreciate what he's doing and understand why he did it, but from an objective viewpoint, ignoring my personal emotional connection with the content, its probably the least exciting of his albums. I love him and I like the album but yea, it's very one-note which is a little disappointing. I'm hoping it grows on me the way folklore did cause I would have said the same about that when it first came out, but that at least addressed a wide and interesting variety of topics so idk we'll see.

I think it’s beautiful, and probably his best album. He said in an interview recently that he didn’t really care about people liking it. He didn’t make it for that reason. He just needed to get the thoughts out of his head and onto paper. He realised at the end of the day everyone goes through something like this or other struggles. I highly recommend watching the docu-series too, as it puts even more me sing behind the songs, like track 5

Midnightblue398

I think the album is vocally amazing and lyrically really deep. Looking back at my first listen, I had the benefit of watching the docuseries before and I think that really colored my impression of the album after seeing the process for him and just how his life had changed so dramatically and emotionally and to really see why he needed to write this type of album. Highly respect it and think it's a great body of work if you're exploring grief and depression.

Nicki

HIGHLY recommend the 4 part documentary series he put out with the album. It makes the album even more meaningful. But vocally this album is perfection.

Maryn Levi

Also have you heard his rap F64? It DESTROYED me and it's SO GOOD

Meghan Blust

I am only a year ahead of him in healing from the traumatic loss of my best friend so I find a lot of this album very difficult to listen to casually but I think it's a beautiful project. I basically wrote a whole ass book of poetry when my best friend died so I 💯 understand the process of this album and I'm proud of him for channeling that pain into something so lovely.

Meghan Blust

I like that Ed is going for a more mellow vibe, but I think a majority of the songs were a bit too generic sounding. I love the lyrics though
