This...album... Glitch for starters a bop, and Dear Reader the most self-aware and brutal love given to me by a celeb that meant something. Other than Bigger than the Sky, the 3 am is just growing on me. It's a fresh like, and it's better than Folklore... Omg did I... But Midnights. The standard 13. It's her best album. Maroon, Midnight Rain, Labrynth, Mastermind. I find these literally all bearable. 1989 is now my second favorite album which contains the negatively offensive Shake It Off (will bop when heard though) and Evermore has a couple I don't go to. But really this is her first no skips since Red for me. I guess ranking now stands Top 5: Midnights, 1989, Evermore, Red (TV), and fight me but Lover. Me! was a good lead single too damn it and I think spelling is very fucking fun lolz and Folklore stays plum last per more unpopular opinion.

2022-11-03 22:24:34 +0000 UTCI have to say Labyrinth is one of my favourite movies too, I watch it so often! :D I definitely agree this album is like a combination of Lover and Reputation and the a little of Folklore/Evermore, especially with the 3am tracks, and I think that's really cool because it shows how her sound is developing. I had a few tracks that had to grow on me too but now I like all of them, my favourites on the regular album are You're on Your Own, Kid, Vigilante Shit, Bejeweled, Karma, Sweet Nothing and Mastermind, then from the 3am tracks The Great War, Paris and Would've, Could've, Should've. I hope you manage to get tickets for the tour! I'm excited/nervous about international dates :D Sending love <3

I wanted to give you my thoughts on the modulation after listening to midnights for almost 2 weeks nonstop. The way I see it the modulation is a representation of her distorted thinking late at night when she’s troubled by inner turmoil. It’s when she thinks of herself as midnight rain That her thinking gets muddled or when she starts to doubt her love in labyrinth that the unclear, doubtful thoughts come back. I hope that makes some sense. I just wanted to share my thoughts with you. I wasn’t sure how I felt about the modulation at first either until I put it in this context. Great review as always! You are for sure not the only person to have that reaction to midnight rain at first and then end up absolutely loving it hahaha. I have a lot of thoughts about Bigger than the whole sky. I lost someone I was very close to a few years ago when he was 28 and the first time I heard that song it reminded me of that situation. “I’m never going to meet what could’ve been should’ve been you” and “you were bigger than a short time” especially. Like it will randomly hit me that I’ll never get to experience who he would and could be now and what he would be doing etc. Also, lyric parallel between that and would’ve could’ve should’ve is interesting because I feel like she could be talking about herself in bigger than the whole sky. In WCS she explains how her relationship with John Mayer irrevocably changed who she could’ve/should’ve been and she can’t go back to who she was before she met him. So I kind of interpret bigger than the whole sky to be her grieving who she could’ve been and that she will never get to “meet” the her that never had that relationship.
