【Silver】 Complete beginner's painting strategy STEP2

In the previous STEP 1, I summarized light and shadow, and now I want to talk about the basics of color and how they combine!

Is color really that important? I know some of you may be thinking, "What's so important about color?

"Super-important."

Especially, knowledge of color schemes is indispensable.

For example, when choosing colors for a character's clothing, accessories, or the color of the building in the background, knowledge of color is necessary in a variety of areas.

If it is a single color, it is still necessary to consider compatibility when combining colors, so I hope you will take a look at this lecture and become interested in color.

↑This image shows the three attributes of color.

The three attributes of color are

Hue

Lightness

Saturation

These allow people to perceive and distinguish colors and communicate them to others.

Three Attributes of Color "Lightness".

Lightness is simply brightness. As shown in the table above, white is considered to have the highest brightness and black the lowest, in a gradation. When a color is composed solely of lightness, it is called achromatic.

Three attributes of color "saturation."

Saturation is the vividness of a color. Dull colors are considered less saturated, while vivid colors are considered more saturated. In the red gradient in the figure above, the more saturated color looks brighter at first glance, but if you look at the brightness alone, you will see that there is actually no difference in brightness.

The three attributes of color "hue."

Hue is the property of color tones, such as red, yellow, blue.... A ring of hue is a circular, cyclical representation of a color, as shown in the figure above.

There are different types of hue rings, and in this case, the Ostwald hue ring is used as a reference.

In this case, the two colors in opposite positions are complementary colors.

What are complementary colors?

Colors that become achromatic when mixed together. They also have the effect of complementing each other's colors.

Opposite colors

Colors on either side of their complementary color are called opposite colors. Strictly speaking, complementary colors are also a type of opposite color, but since this is a bit complicated, we will refer to them as "two sides of the same color. They also have the same effect as complementary colors.

Color schemes from the hue circle

Color schemes can be considered in terms of hue. We have picked up four of the most representative ones.

Dyad

Complementary hue color scheme. A color scheme that uses two colors opposite each other in the hue circle.

Triad

A triad is a color scheme using three colors in an equilateral triangle, which divides the hue circle into three parts.

Tetrad

A four-color scheme in the position of an equilateral rectangle in which the hue ring is divided into four parts.

Split complementary

Split complementary color scheme. A color scheme that uses both sides of a complementary color without using one of the two hues.

These color schemes using hue rings are useful for creating beautiful color schemes easily, even for people who are not familiar with color. I can't think of any colors...! If you can't think of any colors, you may want to try using these for now.

What is tone (color tone)?

Tone is often heard of in the world of design and illustration, but what does it actually mean? Let me give you a brief explanation.

Tone refers to the level or degree of a color's brightness (brightness) and vividness (saturation) combined. It is characterized by the ability to convey impressions with adjectives such as "cheerful tone," "calm tone," and so on.

In this issue, we would like to pick up and introduce four types of tones that are often seen among them.

Pale

The tone with the highest lightness on the PCCS (Public Color Control System of Japan) tonal concept chart.

It gives a soft image.

Deep

A tone with low lightness that is considered to have the next highest saturation after vivid in the PCCS (The Color Scheme of the Color Science Institute of Japan) tonal concept diagram.

It produces a classic image.

Grayish

A tone with low saturation and medium brightness on the PCCS (Public Color Control System of Japan) tonal concept diagram.

It is a grayish color with an elegant image.

Vivid

The tone with the highest saturation on the PCCS (Public Color Control System of Japan) tonal chart.

Vibrant, primary colors that are unmixed to create a cheerful image.

There are many more types of tones besides the four just mentioned, so if you are interested in them, you may try searching for "PCCS tones".

Lastly, I would like to recommend some color scheme sites!

Color Supply

https://colorsupplyyy.com/app

This site allows you to instantly see color schemes based on hue rings such as dyads and triads mentioned in this lecture, and also allows you to search for colors based on impressions such as manga and nature. The site is designed to be very easy to read, so we recommend it.

Happy Hues

https://www.happyhues.co/palettes/16

This site offers not only a color palette, but also an instant preview of the design using the colors, which is great for beginners who don't know how to actually use the colors! This is a great site for beginners who don't know how to use colors!

You can also read about the color psychology of the colors you choose, which is great for studying color impressions! However, the site is in English, so if you cannot read it, you will need to use an automatic translation service such as Google.

Color UI

https://colorsui.com/

This site allows you to view over 1000 color schemes, so it is a site for people who have difficulty deciding on a color. There is also a bookmark function for favorite palettes, which is very convenient.
