Back in the late 80's there was this deodorant called Teen Spirit that was marketed just to teens. One day he came home from somewhere and he saw that his girlfriend's best friend spray painted on the wall of his apartment "Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit" cause he didn't showers that often. Also the janitor is kind of a nod to when he dropped out of high school when he was just 14 and then 2 years later he had to work as a janitor at his old high school.
