Only Fools and Horses - S1E6 'The Russians Are Coming'

Comments

You ''HAD TO'' go to the shop looking like that?

Danny Heywood

Are we not doing last episode of season 1 this week ??

Dave

is the first season supposed to be the worst ? because im loving it already now

Gregor Bajc

I feel as though Delboy wouldn't pronounce the word "nuclear" correctly. I feel as though he's 100% the sort of person to say "nuke-u-lar", given how prone he is to mispronouncing other words. Bit of a missed trick, there.

Right Said Brett

Interesting fact: Lennard Pearce (grandad) once shook hands with Adolf Hitler.

esclad

lol people are so harsh on this series, i mean yeah its nothing amazing compared to how good the show becomes, but its a solid foundation season, really solid episodes, only thing i despise is that damn theme music, but not to worry, you are very close now to the Legendary theme music :D im not sure if its on christmas crackers or not, but series 2 for sure

Ricky

Yeah, "corner shop" would've been a better choice, in retrospect. David Jason should know that, he used to be the errand boy in one of them in a past life.

Ian Warren

Nice to hear Jess saying "Only Fools and Horses" and not OFAH 🤣🤣

Josip Buretić

I'm glad they didn't take the advice of skipping series one. It lays the foundations and makes a new viewer appreciate series 2 all the more.

Keith Pratt

This is what makes the show its not the best episode but one minute you’re crying and the next you are laughing there’s so much more of that to come and that’s why it’s a brilliant show

Corey

We're almost there. I can't wait for you guys to get past S1. The theme music is awful, the episodes and plots are mostly poor and not very funny. The show skyrockets partway through S2 and keeps climbing from there. I love this show so much, but god I dislike the first series.

Ryan W.

Same here Tom ❤️ this reactions are special to me since my dad is unfortunately not longer with us 💔

Josip Buretić

Fantastic reaction, I'm with you Mike I cannot switch off either with current world events. I think we all need a laugh and see you trying on the make up man lol

Central Hub

Some of my best childhood memories are watching this show with my dad. Glad to relive this with you guys. Gets better and better! Bring on S2 & Trigger!

Tom

Rooney?

Kevin Duke

Well said, Grandad.

emu cat

Oh, you have the uncensored version lol The ones that air on TV here now censor words like “p*ki” out.

Kayleigh

I am looking forward to the day when Mike turns up to a only fools reaction wearing jewellery with copperplate writing.

Joanna

The show doesn't pick up until series 3 in my opinion, then it quickly becomes excellent

James Aston

That and "Come and See".

Keith Pratt

You need to find a British paper crown from Christmas crackers…. (Or make one from crepe paper)

Kieran B

Same here

Kieran B

Forgot how crap some of these early episodes are... they must think we're mental and wouldn't blame them for sacking it off here

Jason

I watched After Work Reactions react to OF&H. It was so jarring when he paused at the start of the end credits every single time.

Keith Pratt

A classic clip!

Menty

Yes it must have been a 'moment' in that studio especially if Lennard Pearce did it in 1 take.

Fordy7169

NGL I love the dig at Chelsea what with John Sullivan being a passionate Fulham fan

Sean Riley

The studio audience goes deathly quiet during Grandad's war speech. It's such a powerful scene. It puts this episode in the top 2 from series 1 for me. "They promised us homes fit for heroes, they give us heroes fit for homes..."

Keith Pratt

At school in the mid-eighties they made us watch Threads!

Keith Pratt

Got to keep this outfit haha!

Keatan Forrest

All the best to your dad, Mark.

Keith Pratt

I love the way this show can make you cry one minute and laugh the next . There is some great moments like that going forward. Mike you looking just like a 80s yuppy del would be proud 👏

Dango247

Jess, them building the shelter was not immediately straight after they got stopped by the police. It jumped chronologically to where they 1st appeared in it. It could have been a couple of days and Del was in different clothes too. Remember these were only just less than 30 minute episodes in early series' so them actually building it was not going to be part of the script.

Fordy7169

IMO the last 3 specials are the 3 stinkers and a certain mid-80's special which even John Sullivan was not happy with, initials ARF

Fordy7169

'Readies' was going to be the show's title originally.

Si

Love this episode 😀

Si

I know you like the bit with the 3 wheeled yellow van. So I strongly recommended the 10 minute long clip of Jeremy clarkson doing a bit on 3 wheeler vans haha. Very funny, unexpected and I always see it as a tribute to This haha. Worth a look , hope you can fit it in , in conjunction with this program :)

Mark Rudd

I've heard Nicholas Lyndhurst tell the latter story so I'd say it's true.

David Cole

Really didn’t think I’d be smiling or laughing today. My dad had a small heart attack last night and seems like he will be ok but I’ve been stressing since and it’s crazy how Mike and Jess has made me smile for the last 30 mins. Just shows how powerful this channel really is and how laughter can help with things. Anyway sorry to put a damper on things, just wanted to share how much I appreciate your reactions

Mark Rudd

Del Bum ❌ Bum Boy ✅

Paul John Jeffs

love seeing you react to these classic shows Porridge is another great one

Brill Smith

Why bother posting Nicholas? Does it make you feel good to belittle someone's family and memories? Tom's post was interesting and relevant yours was not. Take your rudeness and immaturity somewhere else 🤫

Isthereany1herecalledJohn?

Oh that's weird because I loved every moment of it.

Jamie

It's been so long since I watched this show, and I think what I remember most is that it just gets better from series two. As good as series one is, it all just gets better and better.

Alexander Munro

It's good but there are probably more and obviously funnier ones given the war element in this one. Without giving specifics away I do like Grandad's talk with Rodney about a particular family heirloom, dead funny!

Eric

Leonard Pearce (grandad) lost his father in the First World War, so his speech was totally from the heart. I also read that a a young actor, Pearce shook hands with Hitler while touring Germany with a theatre company. Not sure how true that last bit is but it’s a story that has done the rounds for years.

Tom

Glad that you have got the worst episode of OFAH out the way in my opinion. I have watched random repeats of all episodes since the early eighties when they came out and this episode I can honestly say I've never bothered repeating...saying that there are still some funny bits in it lol

Your Precious Prints

I'm in the minority on this one, but it's always been one of my favourite episodes. You get a real sense of who they all are in this one and their lived experiences. Grandad is adamant about not wanting to survive, Rodney will try to cause he's still young enough that he thinks it matters that someone does and Del never takes any of it seriously, not from the first minute to the last. He's a guy who knows the whole idea is mad, and he's too upbeat to ever think it'll happen anyway. And you know what? Del, as it turns out, is right. The world is too full of mercenary types just like him and that's why nobody will ever do it. My 20 year old self (when I was Rodney's age, in short) woulda hated me for saying it ... but MAD worked. :) I love everything about that episdoe but especially Del's bizarre and hilarious rationale at the end about becoming the head of state!

James Forrest

Yeah it’s by far the worst episode tbh

zStarr

I know people have been anticipating that bit, but I'm not sure that term is known in America. They didn't seem to bristle at it the way many Brits have been conditioned to when they hear it.

ElvisLee

haha, Mike just admit it was just you stealing copper 😜 (just joking)

James Welsh

You look like a proper top geezer 👍🤣

Mark E

This episode has one of the best bits of dialogue in any show ever from grandad

Joe

The theme of this episode goes to show that the act of keeping us in fear in order to keep us compliant is nothing new. Even back then children were going to bed with the possibility of nuclear war on their little minds.

ElvisLee

Thank goodness that diabolical theme tune is nearly over. Roll on season 2 for the iconic opening and closing tunes. Please listen to the tune wiv the end credits at least once 🙏

Darci

I love Wednesdays. Mike, you're looking totally kushty. I love the way you're embracing OFAH. It only gets better and better.

Nathalie Grainger Bradbury

It’s not a favourite episode of mine but Grandads powerful speech about War really hit me.

The Puzzler 99

I did a double take when Del said "There'll be a p*ki shop open", in normal conversation. I know it was a different time, but jesus.

Karlos

Strangely, I’m only one generation away from people joining the army at 14. My dad did. As he was an old dad (42 when I was born in 1957), he had joined the Army Boy Service in 1929. His mum was widowed with four kids, as his dad was killed at 27 in WW1. My dad had the rank of ‘drummer’ when he joined and was able to complete his education with the army before he was shipped to Palestine in 1936, where he saw his first action. Three years later, he and his two brothers were fighting in WW2. All three survived. He often used Delboy’s speech about mine being one of the first generations of British kids not to have to go to war, but he saw that as a good thing rather than as a stick to keep me in check.

Tom

But the subject matter of the episode was very topical at the time. In the midst of the Cold War and talk of 4 minute warnings and fallout shelters. It was being talked about on the news and in schools.

Julian

This was October 1981. We were sending soldiers half way across the world to fight within 6 months of this!

Julian

Yeh totally, but it was part of normal language at the time unfortunately. I went to school in the 80s and nobody would blink twice at hearing that.

Julian

Don't worry the episode next is set at Christmas, honest. Do you really think Del Boy is not going to sell the lead as soon as their trial run is over? Cash is King.

Fordy7169

Looking great Mike,, " This time next year, you will be a millionaire " :) :)

Darren Purves

Looking dapper Mike! 😎✌🏽

Niile Creary

Wednesday’s are my favourite day…waking up to another brilliant reaction to OFAH. Mike looking cushty again 😂

Col

" Del bum " 🤣

Mark R

It's crazy that we get an incredible speech by grandad about the horrors of war that hits that hard and then a few minutes later you get a racial slur that just comes out of nowhere in the same episode. Definitely would be cut out on a broadcast today, and for good reason.

Robert McMillan

Fantastic reaction. If you are feeling very (and I do mean *very*) brave you should react to a BBC TV movie from 1984 called "Threads". It's a film everyone should see at least once (you'll only want to see it once, trust me) and it covers the realities of a nuclear exchange, the effect it would have on people (it focuses on Sheffield in the UK) and what it would mean for the future. It is, by some margin, the most terrifying thing ever put on film.

Dryfesands

For the next episode Mike? https://imgur.com/a/pi0HM1C

PunchyPariah

You really suit this style Mike 😂 I’m loving these reactions from you guys, there are a few episodes I really can’t wait for, they make me belly laugh even now

Lauren Massey

This is the original theme tune, which was replaced by the other that has been on previous uploads. Must be from an original, which hadn't been altered. From series 2 the theme was the one with lyrics, written and sung by John Sullivan.

Nicky Wall

Free house and you haven't invited us all round for a party 😮

Steve G

Walking dogs then a free house! I’ve got this, Peep Show, Still Game and Ali G all to watch. What a morning.

Paul Archibald

Yes a lovely reaction, Mike is looking cushty.. Jess laugh is beautiful 😊 Goodnight John boy ..

Nick

Mike looks like he should be racing greyhounds in Sheffield!

Dan Turner

With the flatcap Mike can actually pull off the English geezer look! 👍

Matt Harwood

That was awesome way to start the day and my Photoshop pic of jess as grandad got mentioned made my day too✌️😂❤️

Col Boro

Great reaction guys

Sam Hollingsworth

👍👍

TheHigh

Fantastic timing after drones shot down over Poland last night 😅

na plz

Honestly, every time I see Grandad’s war speech, it brings a lump to my throat. It’s the way Lennard Pearce looks so sad as he delivers his lines. Also, a bit of proof that this was filmed in front of a live studio audience: Lennard Pearce says ‘The politicians’ twice because the laughter from Rodney’s previous line hadn’t quite died down yet.
