Only Fools and Horses - S1E2 'Go West Young Man'

Comments

I actually remember this original theme song for the older episodes in the early 2000’s when I first started watching this. I watched reruns on UKGold.

Kayleigh

Probably said before but we call any bloke that acts that way dodgy deals and that a del boy

scott o'neill

Love you’re reacting to only fools… it’s home to some genuinely hilarious scenes and definitely gets better later on. Absolute classic!

Joe

Intro will turn into a classic

kris1976melo

Pernod, coke with lime = fallen oil barrel, the top of it ends up looking like oil spill, the colour looks like it's dirt. Pure filthy drink to get pissed with 🤣

Dan Anderson

I think I'm gonna have to pull away from Patreon for quite a while, this is the only series I'm interested in you watching. Can't really justify paying the money to the missus for 4 episodes a month.. Will clock back in at a later time when you've got quite a few OFAH episodes and Extras to watch.

Keg

This is the original theme tune for this show, written by Ronnie Hazlehurst ("The 2 Ronnies" , "Are You Being Served", "Last Of The Summer Wine", "Yes Minister" were also theme tunes written by him). It was used for the whole of the first series. In 1982, after the viewing figures had been bad for Only Fools and Horses, John Sullivan wanted to revamp the theme tune and explained what the phrase 'Only Fools and Horses' actually meant. He asked Rockney style band Chas and Dave to record the new theme tune for Only Fools and Horses, which he had written. They were in Australia, after the success of their romantic ballad ‘Ain't No Pleasing You' had stayed in the charts for eleven weeks and they were not available to record it. John Sullivan recorded the new opening and closing (Hooky Street) theme tune himself instead. It was used from the beginning of the second series.

Wolf Hugo

Steve Carell is a big fan of ofah.

yo mo

The episode aired on 15th Sep, 1981. This was the lowest viewed episode with 6.1 million viewers. Sounds a lot today, but there were only 3 TV channels. The previous episode had 9.2 million.

Keith Pratt

Where are you from brother? I heard OFAH is big in many countries throughout Europe!

Tom

Given its consistency, over the 20+ years, sometimes reckon this is the greatest UK comedy. Takes a while to get going but once it does, & the characters established, it becomes embedded in Brit-comedy culture & arguably the best. Be wary, it does take a bit of time before it becomes great. For me...a bit like (my fav US one) Frasier...where the characters matured, able to mix great dialogue with slapstick & poignancy.

Karl Devereux

They are stopping after series 1 to do The IT Crowd.

Jeffrey44

If they do two a week, it'll be over quicker. One a week's fine.

Keith Pratt

🤣

Si

Can’t wait for the next reaction. Hopefully you can do at least 2 episodes a week. Got a feeling this might become your favourite British sitcom just like it is for many of us

Keiran Cottington

Loving these! Really hope you can find a way to do 2 a week. Partly because there’s just so many episodes but mostly because your reaction to this show is great!

James Hyde

I don’t mind the first theme song but yeah the second is a classic

Boydern

Watching episodes of OFAH with you, is like watching them for the first time. It brings back the magic.

Michele N

And of course at some point it is ONLY Christmas specials.

Jeffrey44

GARY

Ducactus

So glad you found the original broadcasts, you'll see the full episodes without the ridiculous cuts which have become the norm. Viewers will just have to put up with the (admittedly shit) theme song for now until the change next series.

Russell Thomas

or out of context completely. He also chucks in random German, Italian, etc amongst the French. Si'l vous plait, danke schoen!

Fordy7169

When Del says a French phrase it's ALWAYS wrong lol 😆

Martin Close

i love these

Don don

Mike and Jess be aware, at the end of every series there is always a special episode or two in-between series i.e. Christmas Special etc. Just so you watch them in sequence.

esclad

Yes original intro music soon changes to the classic theme tune everyone knows today. I would say 90 percent of people from Britain could sing the ofah theme tune. I personally think it gets better from season 3. Its a long one but worth sticking with in my opinion. The writer John Sullivan (unfortunately now passed) wrote alot of really good sitcoms and was a genius with words. He also is the singer on the new( but now iconic) theme tune as he couldn't get anyone to sing it in time for the recording of it x

Dawn

The amount of people triggered by the intro music! It's the real music from when it was broadcast, call themselves fans🙄. The title of every episode is usually a play on another known movie/song/TV related media, today's I'm sure is named after a Laurel and Hardy movie. Moonlighting another 80s great TV show also did this and I'm sure the writers watched OFAH as there is English banter in it that can only have come, from watching OFAH. It's good that most of the banter and jokes are landing with you, I've seen so many fake reactions to this show where people, just don't even try to understand or reason on what's, being said and just fake laugh but I never think you two are not intelligent enough to work out whats said even if you don't get the reference or name of something, you know the intention of the words. Mike seems to have had an upgrade as he's on it with this show and (The) Peepshow. Today you got introduced to a regular called Boyce and Trigger from last week's episode.

Gary

I say it every time I see a reaction channel react to this show, it's absolutely incredible how much better it gets as it progresses in a way that doesn't seem likely when you watch the first couple of series which are already strong in themselves.

Craig

Great reaction as always thanks guys!!

Joseph Potter

Strawberry Daqiri and Pina Coloda are my two favourite cocktails - I had no idea the Miami Vice cocktail was a thing. So I'll be inflicting that order on bartender some point soon!

Aaron Hinton

It was the original intro - You will see the REAL intro soon!

Keatan Forrest

Shout out to all of us who are triggered by the intro music for reasons still unknown to Mike and Jess 😂

Craig

Thanks for the info. From what I've seen the first Christmas special comes at the end of series 2 correct?

RegenerationNationTV

So true 😄

Josip Buretić

Not sure where you guys stream the episodes from, but make sure you watch the "Xmas Special" at the end of every series. Most sites list the specials seperately (or not at all) and not at the end of each series where they should be watched so they are easy to miss. Use this list on wikipedia and the last episode of every series is the "Xmas Special" so it'll make sure you catch every one at the right time chronologically. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Only_Fools_and_Horses_episodes Just skim the episode titles on the left for the last episode then a Google search will give you a few results for each one. One of my all time favourite shows, looking forward to doing my yearly rewatch with you guys this time!

Richard McLoughlin

I saw a video of her at an OFAH convention.

Keith Pratt

So good

Samuel Leonard

Just came back from beach and now I will watch my favorite couple react to my favorite show. Life can be sometimes so beautiful 💙❤️ it makes me so happy seeing how much you enjoy watching OFAH

Josip Buretić

I'm with you on that, although it might be too much for Mike & Jess, as they've committed to a lot of other content. It's just that, given how many series/episodes of OFAH there is, they could for a good year or more!

Paul08031977

I've had to screencast my phone to my TV to watch it on big screen, - seems best way

Jaxon's Jerseys

Can you get patreon app on any smart TVs?

Thomas Hillier

I asked for an Emperor Burger and he brings me an Empire Burger!!!

Si

it was the original music.

jamestoni

He calls him a wally which he uses a lot

Adam 95

Really wish you guys would do 2 episodes a week, just because I can't wait for you to see certain episodes and moments.😆

JokerDanny

I was shocked to hear him call Rodney a Willy, I thought his thing was plonker

Jamie Derry

I'm watching this while eating an Empire Burger™. Life is good.

Jeffrey44

Del Boy could sell ice to an Eskimo

Ben Richards

It's great that they're using Internet Archive. I was just checking it out and all the episodes seem to be uncut.

Keith Pratt

Been a long few days waiting twiddling my thumbs for another ofah reaction so excited now it's here :)

david s

Its great to see you enjoying this classic comedy and it only gets better👍🏻

Superclarky666

Another thing you’ll notice about del is his fancy cocktails which are usually simple drinks over explained 😆

Mark Rudd

Lmao facts, him saying Bonjour as he leaves always kills me

zStarr

Even if you don't know any French you can just assume that whatever he says is completely wrong and the funny part for me is he says it with such confidence.

Alexander Munro

What a berk 😆

Mark Rudd

Boycie is a brilliant funny character. His development becomes one of the best when it comes to funny interactions

Mark Rudd

Some of these early episodes are better than I remembered.

Julian

Did Mike just call Del Boy a scum bag?

Ominous

All the later TV repeats and DVD releases have dubbed over the start and end credits with John Sullivan's bespoke songs, thank god.

Fordy7169

Loved the first two :) Glad you guys are getting so much out of it!

James Forrest

Nice shirt there Mike. There is certainly nothing wrong with a woman with "fat thighs" 🤗🤗🤗wow I certainly don't like the original theme 🤮

Josh Read

Mike & Jess, when the intro theme song changes try and listen to the lyrics and then at the end leave the outro credits song play as it has different words. They are part of the show, amusing and describe their wheeling and dealing, so don't skip.

Fordy7169

This show was great from the start but it just got better - it was not just a comedy show, they became characters that you really cared about. The themes of this show though started at episode 1. They had the space to develop the characters, add new characters.

David Bingham

It’s funny the old Intro I would have skipped every time but the one we all know and love I never ever skipped it becomes a little sing a long the start of every ep , reminds me of fresh prince of bel air in that sense , we all know the words

zStarr

Do you mean the 'cast to TV' button? I don't think Patreon's video player has that. Does your iphone have a 'Smart View' or 'Screen Mirroring' feature like Android does?

Megatron

Hi everyone - Apologies if this Question makes no sense, still navigating my way around the channel 😁. I use an IPhone & on Patreon as I go to watch today’s only fools n horses it doesnt show symbol top page to tap so I can Watch on my TV. I need to watch on my phone - is everyone the same? Do u need to wait until it crosses on to YouTube to enable this action? Hope this makes some kind of sense 😳. Thank you Mike & Jess for reacting to this - any advice would be appreciated. Have a lovely day friends 👍

Claire Smillie

It wasn't specifically a gay district, only parts of Soho were unofficial LGT areas, such as Old Compton Street etc. It was probably better known as an 'entertainment district', music venues, clubs, sex shops, strip joints etc. It changed partly as a result of gentrification, but also it reflected the culture at the time, particularly 90s onwards, as the Internet put paid to the sex industry there, and attitudes were changing, etc. There were also some great record shops there back in the day, like Black Market etc, but most have closed. Also, used be a centre for media, with quite a few post-production video places. My friend and I worked as runners during the holidays for a few years. It's also where China Town is. Berwick street market is still going, even if it's changed quite a bit. Carnaby street is just touristy, but has been for a long time. But most of the high end designer stores are in Bond Street - and they've been there for years - which isn't in Soho, and Sloane Street, which is Knightsbridge

Paul08031977

The blonde in the club is Jo Good - she's now a BBC radio DJ. She's got a YouTube channel, Middle Age Minx. She still goes to the annual Only Fools convention... (meet & greets)

Karina Bailey

Great start to my day off. Can’t wait for next Wednesday already!

Paul Archibald

I hate the old intro my god lol

zStarr

Soho in the West End used to be London's gay district back in the eighties, it probably wasn't all that difficult back then to inadvertently wander into a gay bar like they did. Since gentrification took hold, "up west" is now incredibly boring, full of obnoxiously upmarket restaurants and expensive luxury fashion chain stores to fleece Chinese tourists. Sad.

Charlie

👍👍

TheHigh

It’s not the “correct” theme. This is the genuine article.

Anthony Skelton

That's what I was waiting for.

Keith Pratt

That astro turf gag never gets old hah

Jack Veazey

I posted a link earlier explaining the theme tune confusion 👍

Rob G

John Sullivan who wrote the series had written a theme but for some reason the BBC decided to use this theme for series 1. By series 2 he had persuaded them to use his theme, when series 1 is repeated now they have usually dubbed his theme onto it

Neil

An American tale fievel goes west. What a movie

Paul Baker

Such a joy watching you watch my favourite comedy and you get it completely already. It only gets better.

David Spittlehouse

About the theme tune… https://onlyfoolsandhorses.fandom.com/wiki/Theme_tune

Rob G

Such a shame KillerMcKnight are doing this reaction in parallel with yours, takes the shine off it a bit 😑 They have the correct theme tune on their episodes too, so you could ask them where they are getting them from 😊

Bikeaholic

Yeah, same here. We must be young'ens :D it sounds like the intro for a daytime game show

Karlos

Most DVD releases and modern broadcasts changed to the more famous theme, but the original had the jazzy one until series 2.

Andy

That opening music is so bizarre, ive never heard it before in my life (except your last reaction)

Inter Malager

Nearly every weekend when we was kid's, me, my little bro and my sisters would all stay at my grandparents, my grandad loved this show and he would always have it on, it brings me back so many good memories. ❤️ 😊

Mark R

Cheeseburger!!! 😂😂😂

Matt Draper

What a journey, definitely a look into a less showcased side of England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿. Anybody that looks to make a few quid flipping is known as a bit of a Delboy and anyone that's a bit wet behind the ears is a Rodney or a plonker

Christian Rolfe

Ah. Maybe not. I think this one may have been edited. I'm sure Grandad originally said "yeah, it really put me off my stroke" during that bit about his wedding night. 🤣

Simon Crockford

Thinking about it, if these episodes are original, unedited versions there'll be some stuff that later fell foul of the cancel culture. Admittedly, some of the language should stay in the 80s but some of the jokes will work better unedited

Simon Crockford

perfick

Col Boro

Starts with Season 2 I believe.

Martyn dally

Still so happy you are watching Only Fools! It's literally THEE British sitcom! You will get to absolutely love the relationship and chemistry between Del & Rodney......the extra characters that come into the show (Boycie in this one) just add to what is an absolute classic!! Also love how Mike picked up on the cockney 'wide boy' Mickey Flanagan type moves! 😂

Matt Harwood

Are they are couple of ravers? Nah they’re a couple of geezers 😂

AWR93

Where’s the classic only fools into song

Taylor Thomas

Don't know if you've come across it yet but "berk" is the shortened version of the cockney rhyming slang "Berkeley Hunt"... Berk tends to be taken in a very light hearted way and really stands on its own as an insult, separate from what it's standing in for. I won't explain what that is because there's women present but I'm sure you'll figure it out

na plz

I rewatched the whole thing last Sunday and guys you're in for a treat, the further you go, the better this show gets, series 2, episode 7 is fantastic

Billy

I don’t remember that opening credit music either 😅

Chris Garratt

Lovely jubbly!😄
