I still remember watching Ayrton Senna’s fatal crash with my grandad, so any time there’s accidents like that it’s terrifying. Watched Dan Wheldon’s in IndyCar too, that was awful. The safety standards are so much higher now thankfully - glad Grosjean was able to walk away

Kieran B

He was one of the lucky ones to survive as usually in F1 the crashes are fatal with such high speeds! A mirscle for sure!

Theloyalmuppet

he was in the car for 28 seconds, it felt like a lifetime watching it live having seen many deaths over the years, honestly my heart was racing its a odd feeling.

I love romain grosheen.

Ar

who cares hes okay?

Daniel Coughlin

i would pay so much money for youse to watch the entire Drive to Survive series, phenomenal it is

Mimi

I detest this whole "act of god" nonsense. It was an act of the brave race and medical staff that saved him FFS.

Moody Marco

It's pronounced "Grow zhon"

Imogen

Watching this live it felt like a long time but I’d estimate no longer than 30 seconds, long enough some may say! I remember shouting at the TV as one of the Marshalls took forever to start using his extinguisher.

Richard

Loved the pronunciation of Grosjean by Jess at the start, haha.

James Welsh

I watched it live and cried when he came out flames, my GF came through and asked what ya crying for, she watched replay and cried to, it was his kids that got him out, he said afterwards, I need to see my kids. MIRACLE

Darren Purves

This is from the Netflix documentary : Drive to survive .. It's drama'd up a bit .. in reality - he was out of the car in a couple of seconds - but the Doc made you think he was cooking for 10 minutes!

Jay

All the camera angles you mentioned at the beginning, that’s all post production, it’s not the live footage. As I mentioned in the comments the audio and visuals are not lined up in real time. Also, the image of the car being broken in half, we didn’t see that until minutes afterwards. The TV directors never show close up pictures of a crash unless they know the driver is ok.

Julian T

I think for some people it’s just a saying. You can understand that kind of rhetoric but I do agree. The idea that a privileged person competing in extreme sports is chosen to be saved instead of the thousands of children who die every day, it seems a bit ridiculous. It’s just circumstantial and pure luck. The cockpit of a racing car isn’t called the ‘survival cell’ for nothing. They are designed to protect the drivers body. Also when it comes to escaping a fire, the drivers are timed for how quick they can evacuate the car, they practice this stuff. Obviously you don’t expect to be mangled up in a barrier so that makes it more difficult.

Julian T

I also raced single seaters in the late 90s/early 2000s. You feel pretty safe in general but accidents can always happen as you detailed. I only had a few minor shunts. One time a suspension arm came through the side of the cockpit and just missed my leg. Fires are extremely rare. I had an engine blow up one time and the car went on fire, but never in a crash. My dad had a big crash in the 80s where one of the rear wheels sheered off at the hub, spun him into the barrier which flipped him into a barrel roll. He was ok, just shaken up a bit. He was driving one of the safest cars of the time, it was just visually sturdier than other cars.

Julian T

There’s no need for them to check out the Jules Bianchi crash. That one had a bad outcome and there isn’t much to see from what I remember.

Julian T

great reaction , glad i knew he was gunna be ok as it would of been much more horrible to watch not knowing! that line at the end though... a act of god.... hate that shit so much lmao , more like a good fire retardant suit... but lemme guess thats a act of god aswell right... eugh... (not hating on jess saying it , i was just referring to the guy in the video at the end and the ignorance of it in general :P) peacce , on to watch the road safety adds now :P 👍

TheHigh

Netflix get alot stick, often deserved, for over dramatising events. Some drivers refuse to be involved with them for example. However here they did a good job in my view, in reality it all happened within 25 to 35 seconds and he was out of the car but watching it live it felt like this long. I, sadly, watched the tragic Aryton Senna crash live on TV at Imola where he lost his life and watching this I genuinely felt like it had happened again. As Toto Wolff said, modern F1 cars shouldn't break in two. But a shoutout to the engineers and designers who make these cars. He should have died but he went on to carry on his racing career in Indycar the next season

Neil

I think in reality it was like 20 seconds. But they didn't show any replays of the crash for a good 10 minutes which is normally not a good sign

Jack Veazey

This footage makes it look like he's in the fire for 5 minutes lol

Jack Veazey

I saw it live, it was horrific to watch, I definitely thought I’d just watched someone die at the time. It’s slightly more dramatised and dragged out in this version. It was probably about 30 seconds from him hitting the barrier to getting out of the car. One thing I will say is it’s testament to the people who design the cars that he managed to walk away from that

Jason

A powerful video - I wish you knew (or had someone there who could tell you as you watched it) who some of the people speaking/being shown were. His team mate, his team boss, his team owner (unusually at the race - an American called Gene Haas). Most impressively to me: the guy in the black suit who pulled him over was the Doctor! The other guy was the medical car driver spraying extinguisher over both of them. Amazing human story.

Nick Beer

Im so glad this finally got through the polls since i suggested it, i knew it would make a great reaction. I saw this live and i it remains the most ubelievable thing iv seen. I still get goosebumps watching it. Yes, netflix have dramatised it, but the key thing with this video for me is the human spirit. Great reaction guys

Jay Lo

I started racing in the early 1990s and the safety improvements across the sport since that time have been astonishing. Even at the lower levels of single seat racing where I ran out of money and talent I finished up driving a machine exponentially safer than those I began with. High sides, HANS, improved fireproofing, better barriers, better helmet construction, better fuel cell integrity . . . these changes were pioneered in F1, Indy and Nascar, and filtered down to us in junior categories astonishingly quickly. I had two major shunts in my time. One in the late 90s and one in the late 2010s. The former broke an ankle, tore most of the major ligaments in my neck and one shoulder, and knocked out two teeth. The latter I felt a bit dizzy for the rest of the afternoon. The second accident occurred at much higher speed than the first one. A real life demonstration to me of how far the sport had come. It is no exaggeration to say that had the accident in the clip you watched accident occurred 25 years earlier Grosjean would probably not have made it. Had it happened in the grim days of the 60s and 70s when motorsport was horrifically dangerous, he'd have been bloody chunks. Watching this one live reminded my father (who's been involved in motorsport one way or another for most of his life) viscerally of some accidents he'd seen in the 1970s where the drivers were, quite literally I'm afraid, torn to bits as the aluminum chassis of the era just split apart under the forces at play. Incredible how far we've come, but these miracles should never drive complacency. The sport is still dangerous and there are some accidents which are going to always be un-survivable sadly. We just have to keep pushing for better. There's an excellent documentary called "Grand Prix - The Killer Years" if you want to know about the struggle for safety when F1 was still a bloodsport regularly killing 20% of it's grid every season.

Dryfesands

I’ve never seen this before . Never seen anything like it , was almost Biblical . Praise the Lord

Erica

Crazy to think some people were against the halo at first Without it so many crashes could of been worse Hamilton V verstappen at monza and Zhou at Silverstone of the top of my head

Corey

It was a miracle that he survived - he got some serious burns to his hands but the fire suit definitely did its job. To answer some of your questions… He was trapped in the car for 28 seconds It’s the driver’s radio feed you hear in the footage so was Grosjean swearing as he lost control. When watching the race live you don’t hear them real time. They selectively broadcast driver radio messages with a couple of minutes delay. This is from the fly on the wall documentary ‘Drive to Survive’ so isn’t what you see when watching live. When there’s a major crash they now cut away until they know the driver is OK. I was watching it at the time and they showed the replays and various angles once he got out. The car you see pull up is the medical car. They follow the racing cars on the first lap in case of a major crash. That’s why it was there so quickly. They don’t mention it here but the Halo also likely saved his life. It’s a carbon fibre circular structure above the drivers head which protects them during impact. Interestingly, the drivers and fans weren’t originally keen on it as it obstructs the view a bit but it’s saved a few lives since. Might be a good follow up reaction. https://youtu.be/JYAldRnIDsE?si=gtSbAMBPIPsL_roa

MikeyT

They definitely dramatised the length of it. The doctor happened to be in the car behind the pack, he was out of the car before the rest of the cars made it back to the pit, so the whole number of people asking how he is, that was all in a moment. However I still get chills seeing him come up and out of those flames, one of the most awesome shots of human survival. Also, you watched the Formula 1 for rookies video, so you know about the Halo device that's on the cockpit, a decade earlier, this crash would have been lethal.

Athan Immortal

It took him 28 seconds to get out. Netflix: Drive to Survive is a good way to get into F1. The USA has 3 races now, and there are 22 race weekends from March to December.

FRASBO .

It was 27/28 seconds he was in the fire for but watching it live felt like minutes never mind how long it must have felt like for him, that speed and the car breaking in two and ending up the other side of the barrier he should never have survived never mind being in the fire on top of that. if it was in a movie you would complain about how unrealistic it was to survive

josh Conroy

I was in tears and screaming at the tv when this was broadcast. The stages of emotion were crazy. 30 seconds in a fireball and walked out of it. The Jules Bianchi crash is another one you should check out

Malcom Kumar

If you get chance watch this! Hits a lot harder coming from grosjean himself https://youtu.be/QDT-tMtdfSo?si=o1DB1n9Df_phFXb4

Andy G

I was watching this live and I’ve never been so convinced I’d just watched someone die. It was an absolute miracle. He was in that for just under 30 seconds

Team Train

Watched this live it was unbelievable

Corey

He wasn't in the car as long as they make out from the editing but was still incredible he walked away from that
