His portrait of Jez in Peep Show is comedic genius and, while he might not be as naturally witty as David Mitchell and obviously had his career blighted by alcoholism, he is by far the better actor of the two.

2025-06-17 19:30:53 +0000 UTCDavid is a history buff, so he should know the skulls were originally used by the Death's Head Hussars of the Prussian army, and while the Prussians were probably evil by today's standards, so were all the other European powers. My point being when the design came about (200 years before the nazis) they werent more evil than the average. Great sketch anyway though of course, Mitchel and Webb are one of the most iconic comedy duos of the modern era!

Typically Mitchellian joke, one might say 😋.

2025-06-17 13:30:22 +0000 UTCKarl Dönitz was head of the Kriegsmarine, the German Navy, and one of the Nazis' few effective leaaders, since it was he who realised that the British Navy was too vast to be defeated by conventional means, so managed to persuade Hitler to divert resources from his vanity project of a surface fleet into a huge U-Boat fleet, devising the dreaded 'Wolf Packs'. It's true to history that he was made Führer ("U" with an umlaut is pronounced with almost a "U" but no "Y" at its start, rather than "oo" sound, but the "H" is silent, so Jess was pretty much correct in her pronunciation!) immediately after Hitler's suicide by the army command and with the express intent of having a head of state who could surrender to the Allied Supreme Commander, General Eisenhower. The comic conceit, obviously, is in imagining that he would have been thrilled with the promotion!

Mike: heard the crackle at the beginning but you either managed to clean it up in post or it disappeared quickly into the recording

David Mitchell has always been something of a history scholar, he's even written a book on the Kings and Queens of England. I agree with others that you should react to 'Peep Show'. Many hours and seasons of this type of humour.

You two would probably enjoy Peep Show, it leaned on David's character being quite awkward and uptight, and Robert being almost the exact opposite. It's quite uniquely filmed as many of the shots are looking straight to camera from the character's point of view. I'm sorry Russell Howard lost, but hope he's on next week's poll, you two would dig his comedy I think.
