Why the Brits love their Sunday Roast (and how it’s made)

Hey friends! We wanted to give you a quick update on this week’s educational reaction. The video that won the last poll was the hour-long documentary "World War II: The 13 Hours That Saved Britain." While we absolutely still plan to react to it, we just couldn’t make the time to record such a long video this week with the move and everything going on. Instead, we went with the runner-up, "Why the Brits love their Sunday Roast (and how it’s made)." It was a great alternative and much more manageable given the chaos behind the scenes. We promise to get to the WWII documentary as soon as we can, and when we do, we’ll make it up to you with a double upload that week in the educational slot. Thanks for being patient and understanding. We’ve had people reach out telling us to take a break, and while we’re super grateful for the support, we really don’t want to slow down. We might miss a day here or there, but we’re committed to keeping it at 7 videos a week no matter what. Things will be back to normal soon. 💚💜

2025-04-23 18:45:33 +0000 UTCThe problem I find with a lot of British roasts is that people love over boiling vegetables here. To the point that they’re tasteless and most of the nutrients are boiled away. Roast them if you make it. When it’s done right it’s good but it can be ruined easily.

2025-04-17 20:27:03 +0000 UTCA Sunday roast is basically a scaled down version of your thanksgiving meal that we enjoy every week. Side note, you are definitely going to make Yorkshire pudding. A trained chimp can make them. Over to you Mike…

2025-04-17 18:05:47 +0000 UTCAnybody can make one, why it's so popular. Nobody puts all that marinade on the joint tbh, except restaurants and party hosts.

2025-04-17 17:35:38 +0000 UTCI dont like restaurants who try and make a roast dinner fancy like in this video I hate eating out they never taste nice a roast dinner is all about the home comfort food that your mum made when you where growing up not how a 5 star restaurant makes them ill send you a video of how I make it😂

2025-04-17 16:53:08 +0000 UTC@Rob G - Oh yes, the condiments are also key. I also agreed with the lady in the YT video who said that you can't have enough gravy. Proper gravy that is.

2025-04-17 15:39:39 +0000 UTCThe good thing about yorkshire puddings is because they are essentially pancake batter, you can have them with sweet foods too. I sometimes have jam (jelly) on them for dessert if there are any left.

2025-04-17 15:23:35 +0000 UTCYorkshire puds are one of my favourite foods I love the gargantuan ones though that are the size of the plate and you have the rest of the meal inside it

2025-04-17 15:21:11 +0000 UTCThe Toby Carvery chain of restaurants here do the Sunday Roast every day. And if you think back to first episode of Inbetweeners (first school day, so Monday, Tuesday?), they were about to have a Sunday roast (carvery) that night in the pub so that they could get served alcohol.

2025-04-17 15:17:52 +0000 UTCBeef is popular, but so is Chicken, Pork, Lamb - most pubs will offer a choice of meats, or you can get carvery's which you can have a bit of everything

2025-04-17 15:00:17 +0000 UTCIndeed and to go with the meats will be English mustard, horseradish sauce, mint sauce and apple sauce etc according to the meat served, well certainly for me anyway 🙂

2025-04-17 14:38:44 +0000 UTCIn my 60's and I've never had roast beef with rosemary and garlic. Especially garlic, i love it but would never use it with traditional roast beef ............ different strokes for different folks I suppose.

2025-04-17 14:18:09 +0000 UTCStarving now!! Sunday roast is generally an english dinner! Us up in scotland have something similar but mostly chicken tatties veg with gravy and maybe pastry which is what they call yorkshire pudding shaped round

2025-04-17 14:08:37 +0000 UTCFirst of all, I hope your move is progressing well - I think we all know it's a stressful time and hope you are both coping. The trad Sunday roast is so ingrained in our culture here. I don't have it every Sunday anymore, but whenever I'm at my parents on a Sunday, it's happening, and my mother learned her "way" from her mother, who learned her way from her mother, and so on. Not everyone has this opportunity though - which is why a good pub Sunday roast is a viable option, as long as it isn't too "fancy" or expensive. There's nothing fancy about a Sunday roast - and that isn't its purpose - it just needs everything to be cooked well. I've tried making my own on a few occasions, but it isn't the same without others to share it with you - it's very much a social thing.

2025-04-17 14:06:06 +0000 UTCIts not just Roast beef , that the most traditional but you can have Roast chicken, Lamb or pork. Everyone will argue that the way they do it is best, whether it comes to what veg, meat of how to make Yorkshire puddings and everyone's Gran or mum makes it best.

2025-04-17 13:48:29 +0000 UTCYorkshire puddings should be made with beef dripping (I think you call it tallow over there), so it tastes like a beefy, crispy pancake. You can make large ones and use them as wraps, too.
