Pulp - Common People (Live at Reading 2011)

Comments

I was there!

Michael Gorgeon

You must play William Shatners version of the this song 'Common people'. Its suprisingly good.

Terry Cooper

Well, that's serendipitous, watching this and then realise I'm wearing my Pulp t-shirt. Jarvis is a legend and a brilliant front man.

Vicki McCarthy

Sucked to have been The Strokes that night. Disco 2000 from the same set is worth a checkout. Another lyrical story, too

Stu T

Pulp, different class from which this is taken is the best album of all time.

Chris Carleton

Reading is one of the biggest festivals in the uk i like 10 minutes walk from the site but i have only only been once to see eminem

Paul Finn

Every band needs a great front man , and Jarvis is one of the best .

mark barratt

The reason festival crowds are so big is , apart from lots of people buy tickets , is that the uk is a small island with a big motorway network , so people only need to drive a few hours to get to the gig .

mark barratt

You guys should react to James Tomorrow live at Glastonbury ❤️

Nichole Hutchison

It would be awesome if you did a music comedy double feature, ‘help the aged by pulp and then Ali G sings it with Jarvis it’s comedy gold.

Mark Sanders

I was raised on a diet of broken biscuits, sorted for e’s and whizz but I did help the aged.

Mark Sanders

Classic 90’s, Yous should watch the music video of it when his voice was at his best yous both seen a small clip the other day on the mojo music reaction video about brittish bands.

Theloyalmuppet

Listen to their album Different Class, one of the best of the 90s.

Brian Baxter

I was there. The Strokes were on after them that night but Pulp completely stole that weekend. Muse were on the Sunday night and they were phenomenal, but when I think back to that weekend the overriding memory is of Pulp 🙂

Coleyman

Jarvis is one of those unique humans who is true to himself .

mark barratt

Hadn't seen this video before, whoever put it forward, was a good one what with the intro. Obviously knew the song, Disco 2000 will always be my favourite Pulp song though.

Andy Robinson

It's funny that you should mention Sweet Caroline. That song has, in recent years, become the unofficial anthem of the England football team... https://youtu.be/d5s_SGIMoqY?si=i43N0DoN2RXSxokP

Paul

I remember watching that live and thinking, "What the actual f does Jacko think he's doing there?" I cheered when Jarvis got up on stage 🤣

White Dwarf

🤣

White Dwarf

Mike, shame on you for stepping on Jess’ correct pronunciation 😎

Julian T

You’d like the music video for this

Erica

Thank you so much 🤎

Andy McCann

Jarvis a true genius modern British wordsmith. He fits in right alongside the like of Morrissey and Albarn in that regard... And it's just like in the old days I used to compose my own critical notices in my head "The crowd gasp at Cocker's masterful control of the bicycle Skilfully avoiding the dog turd outside the corner shop." Imagining a blue plaque Above the place I first ever touched a girl's chest But hold on You've got to wait for the best You see you should take me seriously Very seriously indeed Cause I've been sleeping with your wife for the past sixteen weeks Smoking your cigarettes Drinking your brandy Messing up the bed that you chose together And in all that time I just wanted you to come home unexpectedly one afternoon And catch us at it in the front room

BlakeK80DrumCovers

Listen to just about any Pulp song, and it will put a smile on your face. I love that Pulp never went for the grungy indie band look, instead opting to be proudly nerdy and fun. Jarvis Cocker never took himself seriously.

Jay

I think it's the story that resonates with people too that makes it such an athem. If you're common and have no money you can't just call daddy to help. A story that still going strong

Gem Lou

Babies is like an episode of Inbetweeners set to music.

Thomas

should have watch a bit further.... ;)

Chris Kay

it is pronounced "redding" :)

Chris Kay

"And you'll never understand how it feels to live your life with no meaning or control, with nowhere left to go. You are amazed that they exist. And they burn so bright whilst you can only wonder, why?" I was a poor working class 16 year old kid when this song was released and i'd just started college. I'd met a few posh nobs who thought it was "cool" to be poor and it made my stomach turn... These lyrics will always mean a lot to me.

BlakeK80DrumCovers

Babies is a really underrated song, Disco 2000 is essential for any 90s playlist, but Sorted For E's and Wizz is an absolute banger. Not that I was ever into that sort of stuff but it's such an hilarious song. 🤣

White Dwarf

I saw Pulp in 1995 at Glastonbury and on the strength of seeing them live I bought their album 'His n Hers', and I can tell you, Pulp is not a one hit wonder band, they have some great songs like 'Disco 2000', Misfits, and 'Do you remember the first time', I hope you react to more of their songs as Jarvis is a one off.

Jason Bonner

Reading Festival is held over three days at the end of August each year. It was kind of a rite of passage form London kids like me. It’s just an hour slow train ride from London Paddington. I first went when I was 15 and camped for the three nights. I remember seeing bands like Traffic, 10cc, Rod Stewart and the Faces, Cockney Rebel and Procul Harem.

Thomas

Richard Hawley is a Sheffield icon in his own right, also has his own street art

Kieran B

Singing along to songs at gigs and pubs and stuff seems a bit more common here - very much part of football culture too but I’m not sure which one came first

Kieran B

Absolutely, it’s criticising the cultural voyeurism and tourism that she instigates which is why he’s showing her round

Kieran B

Watching from Sheffield where Pulp are from and there’s still plenty of street art of Jarvis around, they’re beloved in the city. Arctic Monkeys are from here too

Kieran B

Ricky Gervais is from Reading

Kieran B

Completely agree all round

Kieran B

Also Jess you will like young Jarvis he has definitely got a touch of Elvis's moves but like a geeky english Elvis!

Richard Stokes

Pulp were always a good live band and it's a good one to get an idea of them. However, I'd love you to see them as they were in their pomp. This is them live at Glastonbury 95, singing common people which has just come out and Pulp have this breakthrough moment as they are given the headline slot at the last minute because The Stone Roses can't do it. It's a real moment of Brit pop, the song being sung in its proper context of the time if you see what I mean. https://youtu.be/BwrXAxcy1X0?feature=shared

Richard Stokes

As Mark said above (or below) it's worth watching the music video. The only problem with it is there's a whole verse missing, whether the missing verse was ever actualy there in the video I don't know, but it is in the lyric video on You Tube. The video always brings a smile to my face.

jumpjet

Babies and Disco 2000 are amongst a load of GREAT and humorous storytelling songs by Pulp. The best Brit pop band for me.

Thomas

Jess and Mike, you must watch this. Jarvis Cocker hilariously got arrested for invading the stage during Michael Jackson’s performance of Earth Song at the 1996 Brit Awards. Jackson filled the stage with kids, and Jarvis was fed up with him doing his ‘Jesus bit’. Jackson pulled in a load of Hollywood lawyers and wanted the cops to throw the book at poor Jarvis. Enter a certain Bob Mortimer (this is not a WILTY), whose only legal experience was in the planning department of a London borough, to fight for Jarvis’ freedom. This tells the story. It’s hilarious. https://youtu.be/M9UrQOYOnWo?si=Ud88j8CzWxjJ8U6M

Thomas

I like his little, "Byee" at the end

Steve Small

Karl’s superhero power is Bullshit Man, Jess’ superhero power is pronouncing names and places correctly.

Terrahawk

I don't know how the hell The Strokes followed that...

Dave Atcha

Just a little fun factoid for you guys regarding Jarvis. While attending the 1996 Brit Awards, Cocker and Peter Mansell (a former Pulp member) invaded the stage in a spur-of-the-moment protest against Michael Jackson's performance. Jackson was performing his hit "Earth Song" while surrounded by children and a rabbi.[17] Cocker was detained and interviewed by the police on suspicion of assault. He was accompanied by the comedian Bob Mortimer, who was attending the Brit Awards; Mortimer is a former solicitor and represented him in that capacity.[18] Cocker was released without charge.

Brucey Mitchell (Cheeky)

14 years since they released it, and now you're watching their performance from ... 14 years ago :)

Athan Immortal

Ah this takes me back to when it came out in 95 the year I left school 😎 This song is a British classic and played in bars or house parties would erupt into a singalong

Ianoo23

It's about a guy from the working class meeting a girl from the upper class and showing her all the "normal" things "common" people do. She is an upper class girl who knows nothing about how normal people live and the lyrics suggest she is looking for a "bit of rough"; a British term which describes an upper class person (usually female) who is bored of 'polite society' and wishes to step out and experience the rough masculine embrace that the lower classes have to offer XD By the way... He's laughing at her. He's saying that even though she wants to live like and sleep with common people, she'll never know what it's truly like to be working class because her daddy could bail her out at any moment.

Steve Small

His voice reminds me of one of the beetles haha

Mark Rudd

The music video is much better personally. You get to see an inside idea of tue subject matter he is talking about. Like being in supermarkets and the general area. Although live is awesome. 🤩 think you’d enjoy the music video more

Mark Rudd

This is a fecking banger of a song :) Just away to watch the reaction
