You don’t get a song as incredible as this without a solid rhythm section - drums and bass are impeccable. Bono’s voice in this era was immensely powerful. The Edge on guitar/piano - it’s otherworldly what he can do.

This song wasn’t really meant as a New Year’s anthem, but was about Lech Walesa, the electrician-turned-leader of Solidarity, the movement that challenged Communist rule in Poland. He was a huge figure in the ‘80s, eventually becoming Poland’s president in 1990. U2 were deeply political then, due in no small part to what is now known as ‘The Troubles’ in Northern Ireland. Growing up in London, the bombings of the ‘80s and early ‘90s were sadly common but thanks to Bill Clinton and John Kerry mediating with Tony Blairs government a peace plan ended this.
