American Cops VS British Cops

We don’t have the ‘gun culture’ that exists in the US nor the desire to own firearms for the most part. Clearly certain communities have the need for firearms, farmers & gamekeepers for example but we do not want our relatively placid society fall into the trap that others seem to have. That’s not to say that crime against others does not exist as knife crime can be prevalent in certain areas of cities amongst gangs. I am content in knowing that the likelihood of being attacked (& shot) is minimal compared with living the US. I would worry constantly about the welfare of my children if I lived there. I appreciate that the vast majority of Americans are peace loving people, just like Brits are. I suggest you watch the Iranian Embassy siege that took place in London in May 1980. That shows what happens when you fu*k around with our Police & the SAS, who ‘announced’ themselves on the world stage. A six day siege quickly ended after the latter took nearly all the terrorists out. Maybe worth a reaction as we were gripped by the drama of that event. Best wishes

2024-11-02 10:45:50 +0000 UTCI'd love to see you taking a look at Americans that have moved to Europe, I don't know any Americans where I live in the UK but I've met loads in Spain that have made the move also France, Italy and Portugal are very popular with your fellow Americans. You should take a look at the abandoned homes across Europe and the homes in Italy where you can buy a home from as little as €1. It's surprising how many say that the lack of guns was partly the reason along with history and healthcare.

2024-10-30 15:02:38 +0000 UTCWe have a similar law in Florida when it comes to knives. Ours is 4 inches.

2024-10-30 14:57:20 +0000 UTCMy understanding of Defund the Police is that it really means Demilitarise the Police - but unfortunately the heavy use of sound bite politics in the US leads to a lot of misunderstanding as the wording never really describes what the proponents mean and make it easy for opponents to freely interpret and dismiss the actual argument without going near it. But I won’t get into politics itself here 😁

2024-10-30 14:40:44 +0000 UTCYou can have guns, it’s just much more restricted - you have to have a valid reason (mine was for historical reenactment - most are owned by farmers, if you’ve seen Hot Fuzz there’s some truth to that). Self-defence isn’t a legitimate reason. I used to have a shotgun certificate, you have to have a police officer visit your house and interview you - it’s not that arduous - and check your secure storage. You have to have your doctor provide a report to the police about your mental health, and I think you need two referees but I could be wrong. Section 1 for non-shotguns is more strict but still not *that* difficult to go through. That includes long-barrelled pistols. Section 5 covers most handguns and that’s almost impossible to get unless you’re a trader as far as I’m aware. They used to be slightly more relaxed, but after a school shooting in Scotland in 1996 the majority of people wanted the gun laws to be tightened. There hasn’t been another since.

2024-10-30 14:38:08 +0000 UTCGuns are completely legal... Handguns are illegal. However, it is completely legal to own semi-automatic rifles and shotguns. We just make it incredibly difficult for people to get a license for a gun. Guns are typically only ever owned as shotguns and only ever given to Farmers, Skeet Shooters and Hunters. It is extremely rare for a license for a semi-automatic rifle to be given. Our process is very strict; background checks, interviews, house search, meetings with friends and family and sometimes meetings with GP (General Practitioner). If your reason for wanting a gun in the UK is for "Self-defence" you will be turned away after being laughed at... If you want a gun for self-defence it means you are prepared to aim it at a human, that's not OK. Also, the police control who gets licenses as they have better local knowledge and can make better judgements than the government.

2024-10-30 14:32:48 +0000 UTCThere was a really good documentary 8 years ago where US Police Chiefs came to the UK to learn British de-escalation techniques and how to deal with violent suspects without shooting them. Was really eye-opening https://youtu.be/66pr23xUKZc?si=vkzHsnUO7qBOkK1c

2024-10-30 14:32:42 +0000 UTCThe definition of assault is very different in the UK, it’s much much more broad - doesn’t mean it will be prosecuted though. Same with knife crime, carrying a knife with more than a blade of more than 3 inches is a knife crime and will be included in the stats.
