Copy-edits are gone

I have one book review column and page-proofs and I will be able to fully focus entirely and only on writing new words for the next several months. I am really looking forward to that.

I did, however, finish the last little bit of Endwalker, and I am once again thinking about story structure in MMOs, and in general. Structure thoughts and examinations are Michelle's happy place; it's not work, it's thoughtful joy. It's about story, the conveyance of story, the particular ways in which story has been effectively presented - and while I do not write video game story, story itself is almost universal. Structure is form dependent; to structure anything to convey meaning requires an understanding of the tools with which one can work.

Novel structure is different from short story structure, but both are written and rely on words; movie structures are different again, and the tools different. So, too, games.

I can't speak directly to music or visual art, because what they convey is tonal; it's not so much story as mood, feel. But that, too, requires some structural understanding of the form.

So: I am writing (or will be after I hit "publish" here). But also, one part of my brain is happily poking at structure :)
