I very rarely approach character design with species, shapes are what I care about most and features arise out of the combination of shapes. After all of those features are in place the brain runs its catalogue feature and tries to make sense of it, so some things "kind of" look like a cat or "kind of" look like a monkey
Post-creation the animal that looks most similar to him is a golden snub nosed monkey, didn't know they existed until recently
