Am I the only one that feels strange about them choosing Zuko for their love list above so many good characters exactly after he was selfish enough to betray Iroh and sacrifice the whole earth kingdom? yeah he did have some char development, but he regressed and chose evil and pride over everything else, can't really understand what they liked so much about Zuko to put him in the same category as Iroh, and Spartan even forgot about our boy sokka 😂

There is a couple of filler episodes in the beginning of season 3 that are slow and more character development episode 4 is where Sokka gets his long overdue respect and episode 6 is really when the season begins to take off much surprises ahead !

Super excited to see y'all react to the rest of book 3. Even though I watched this show as it came out as a kid and have since rewatched it many times, seeing y'all react is kind of like watching it for the first time again. So thanks 👍

Great reaction y’all🔥. I can relate to both of yours reactions. These characters almost feel like family in a way and even though they are young, people grow up quick when they’re faced with life changing obstacles like war. Katara is always seen as the mature character, the glue that keeps the gang together. Katara breakdown in front of her father and letting herself be vulnerable is beautiful storytelling. It reminds us that even the strongest individuals are human too.

That's one explanation, but my interpretation was that his face was shrouded for so long, and he is such an atrocious and sadistic man, we almost expect this scary battle-scared fire lord. So when it's revealed that this horrible monster has a very normal/plain fatherly face, its symbolic from zuko's pov. (Also the relationship to azula.)

Also all the characters are wayyy too mature for their age. It’s really unrealistic but understandable as these are characters that children can look up to.

In regards to your comment about Ozai's clean appearance - Up to this point, the show hasn't shown/told us if Ozai has been to war so I don't think he has. While Iroh was a general leading an army against Ba Sing Se, Ozai was home in the Fire Nation and became Fire Lord shortly after the death of Iroh's son.

when thinking about if the gang are “masters” my head cannon is that even basic bending is incredibly difficult and how OP the gang actually is but we just think its standard as we see them the most. so paku calling katara a master was probably valid then and shes just building that even further. spartan dogged the earth army for getting murked by 3 kids but they are revered as great earth benders but when you look at an army vs 3 bending masters, it seems a bit more realistic.

a lot of very deep and complex emotions in this episode, especially with katara saying how she understands why her father had to leave but she doesnt understand why she stills feel so resentful angry and sad. IMO its a very real concept for as we get older we add so much logic to why we feel the way we feel and we can understand that we almost forget emotions are essentially opposite of logical and rational and trying to add reason behind everything you feel only works until it doesnt and im glad its shown here so well. excellent ep

i really admire the parallels between parenting in this episode with ozai and hakoda. The way hakoda shows katara actual love with vulnerability while ozai shows “love” because he thinks zuko follows orders and he earned his spot in the family now.

Sad to see the glider go, especially when you think about how touchy Aang got at Toph for potentially damaging it one episode. I think it was Ty Lee who said 'who?' after Sokka brought up Suki, but that doesn't change the fact that he's the backbender 🪃

That scene between Katara and Hakoda is just so well done. It’s easy to forget that the Gaang are really just children- the way the show is drawn kinda hides their size (and youth). It’s only when you put Katara next to her dad that you realize she’s still a child, who just missed her father.

I feel like when Pakku called Katara a waterbending master that it was legitimate, he’s not the type of guy to just hand over titles like that out of respect, I definitely think the skill she showed at the North Pole earned her the title. And ever since that episode it’s not like we ever see Katara training anymore, she’s mastered her bending, she was taking on dozens of earthbenders and almost took out Azula in the season 2 finale. She’s def a master and prodigy.

find it ironic how, in the end, the earth-benders themselves were the ones who broke down the walls of their last greatest city.
Katara and Toph seem to get better every time we see them. Katara bending massive amounts of water is tantamount to a master, and Toph seems to be able to metal-bend with such ease now. Also, they both look so badass with their capes.
Now that we can see it clearly, Aang's wound looks so much worse than it did in the season finale. It's definitely a miracle he's alive.
We finally get to see the Fire Lord for the first time! He is still an imposing figure but looks much younger than what I expected with his voice and cadence.
The demonstration of Katara's anger was done so beautifully. She knew all the reasons why she wasn't supposed to be angry but anger was what she felt anyway. It really shows how much depth these characters have as human beings and as children. No wonder she sent Sokka to assist their father rather than go herself. At this time, we seem so close yet so far.
Aang has bent all 4 elements and is pretty great at least 3 of them. The gaang is close to the Fire Nation and has the biggest advantage possible. Yet, Aang is crushed emotionally and injured physically and they don't have much of a backup.
I felt sad seeing Aang's staff and glider destroyed. They were many moments in the series when I thought it wouldn't make it, but it held on for so long. For me, burning the glider signifies how Aang will not run away anymore, he has no choice but to face the enemy head-on with everything he's got.
