OH COOL I WAS JUST THINKING OF REPLAYING DISCO 🥹👍👍

Cousin Ira

Disco Elysium is a large bag of mixed feelings for me too. Your remarks are too relatable to me. I played it with my GF, we where really committed - we had to argue over each choice, we where together in awe on beautiful moments of the game, we laughed our ass off on funny stuff like teleporting on the rooftops, etc, etc. Disco Elysium was a last game I played in russian. Even back then, before the 2022 we kind of felt some inner pressure for playing it in russian time after time, but the game was so immensely interesting and unique, and we had no other option as some references and concepts were to complex not only in English but in any language. You have to be a damn social-political linguist to truly get all of the references (which is great, there's not so much media trying to pull that off nowadays). Speaking on russian translation -- it was done by a "high-grade" russian, a socialite with a cultural background. Translation was great, tbh. Apart from "adaptation" approach of translating. So you'd get a brilliant translation of a passage here and a russian imperialistic joke reference there. Or a reference to a brain-dead soviet movie all russians keep citing regardless of social position or education. Such moments where cringe back then and its just plain sad for me now. I hate myself for succumbing to play it in russian. It feels as toxic, corrupted memory now. I cant recommend DE to anyone here except for those who I know they know English way better than me (and I use English for work I must say) And then the marketing/asshole boss situation happened. Back then I was surprised, as much as you do, as much as everyone. Like, throwing away a core essence of success of your organization just for business lulz and marketing giggles seem absurd. Then the new VTMB game company did basically the same. Then the whole world derailed to a path of either self destruction over lack of any sane actions or a path of acting in order to destruct others. Out of nowhere. So DE became a trigger-moment for me personally. A primer to a series of flashbacks from a less shitty times to a current "its sad AF and it would be even shittier from now on" time

Yeah. You can’t go home again. Ultima V saved me as a teen. My mother died, my father crawled into a bottle, but in that game I was The Avatar, adventuring with a stalwart band of heroes to save Lord British and restore the realm. I’ve tried to play it a few times since then, but the memories hit hard, the game seems so antiquated until I finally had to make peace and leave it be.

I decided to bite the bullet and sign up for a handful of patreons after getting the covid check I didn't need, because I was gainfully employed and capable of remote work. Interestingly enough, one of those patreons were for a now shuttered youtube gamer channel, because the algorithm is a massive twat. And now you've once again reminded me of another bullet I need to bite, and that is buying Disco Elysium and finally playing it.

I play this game at night called "Retro Bowl". The thing the game doesn't tell you, but it definitely teaches you, is that you can get the same or better stats and performance by constantly switching out your expensive and veteran players by replacing them with rookies. Cheap Rookies. Rookies that aren't quite as good. . .don't have those same talent scores. Sounds like me and the games industry have been playing the same game lately.

I experience a similar thing in relation to the classic anime I watched as a teenager. It’s not that they’re no longer good, it’s that trying to recreate past magic leaves me in a looking-back-at-looking house of mirrors. As for the channel, I watch Strat not so much for a rundown on any particular game, but for the meta-commentary on the industry, games in general, society, and we, the players. (Yeah, no pressure there.😅) [And the same goes for the other fellow whose name rhymes with “democracy.”😉]

Great video man. It’s cool hearing you open up about your personal life. It’s good to hear that your patreon subs make a difference.
