2024-03-15 18:17:45 +0000 UTCFair criticisms. I think there may be a disconnect in terms of the sonic palette some people are going into this record with, which may differ from your own. I feel as if the people who grew up on the likes of Brockhampton, Tyler and Frank Ocean, may get more out of this record being accustomed to the ‘disguised vocals’ sound. The choice to distort or abstract these vocals may indeed come out of a place of insecurity, but in a way that’s almost where a bit of the charm comes from. The insecurity is relatable in a way, and creates something set apart from most other music you’d hear and consume. It feels very honest in the way the songs are being delivered. I don’t love everything on here, but I do really find myself connecting with the vulnerability. Fair to say though that I would also love to hear a record that pushes the boundaries in his vocal expression in similar ways to Guide Dog. Also worthy to note that this is a mixtape of throwaways that didn’t land on the last album, or his next one, Vanisher. (Not that it should be absolved from criticism because of this lol). Curious to see where this young talent goes! Great video as always Jon!
