A little peek into my process! When I do commissions I like to offer a few 'thumbnail sketches' (here in pink) at the start of the process. These are just for a general idea of posing; the anatomy will be terrible, but it helps clients visualize the ideas in my head haha. With this one the commissioner had a general idea of the pose she wanted so I was able to run with that!

From there I'll adjust the posing and such to their liking and work it up into a refined sketch. Sometimes we'll move limbs, hands, head angle, etc. This is still a sketch, so details can still look shaky! My sketches are MESSY compared to some artists haha. I like to again hammer out any requested changes here, finalize the desired expression, ask what things the client would like to see etc.

Next I'll ink and flat colour. This is where I'll offer one last pass for changes, and then from there it's the home stretch with shading. :) Usually I don't start the background until the inks & flat colours are approved for a couple of reasons. Pose changes can effect the surroundings, and having the background visible behind the flat colour image of the character can sometimes be distracting; I prefer the client to focus on their character at this stage so that no needed changes are missed! :D

Huh. Not a bad idea to think about for just drawing for yourself either. Even if you have an idea of what you want to do, maybe try a few small variations anyways. Thinks will definitely look different on paper vs in your head.
