Daryl had the book. It fell from his bag that Carol lifted. She still has her bag on her back in that scene. Dary at this point is the one trying and trying to keep faith, for himself and others which I think is why he stopped Carol from shooting Noah. Carol has lost her faith and hope. She is the one we see having all these flashbacks and sees the smoke go up in the air.

Or maybe instead of Daryl, she needs to talk to Tyreese who is more openly empathetic. Or maybe even Father Gabriel. Or Rick. Hoping is cool, but it is the hope that kills you. And now that you've released episode 8 of this season, I hope you did not miss the post-credit scene in it. 😁
