We didn't see that twist coming AT ALL! Mind-blowing! 🤯

What I am about to tell you is not considered a spoiler because the show never addressed it anyway.
Abraham went on a run to get supplies and food. When he returned, he learnt that his comrades (those four soldiers) had raped his wife and abused his children. That was why he beat them to death. But his family witnessed it and became afraid of him. Even before the apocalypse, he had a fierce temper, but he never hit his wife or his children. Seeing that temper escalate into murder right in front of their eyes exposed them to the serious reality of having an active soldier in their family.
I blame his wife for endangering herself and her children like that when all he was trying to do was keep them safe. No matter what, the vulnerable ones will always need a protector. Abraham was theirs. Leaving him was inexcusable, and Abraham finding their devoured corpse less than a mile away from their refuge would damage him almost irreparably.
What Eugene did to him was the ultimate betrayal, even if it kept him alive. The hope of undoing what caused the death of his family, and even before then, put them in a position to be abused. I do not blame Eugene for saving his own life (self help) - and by extension, Abraham's. But it was not very smart of him to try to explain it away with some of his final words of the episode: "I am smarter than you..."
Abraham is one of our favourite characters in the series. As for Eugene, he grew on us with time.
