CAN WE CATCH A BREAK?! | Couple First Time Watching The Walking Dead | 4x14

I know it might be a bit late, but after rewatching this episode once again, I felt compelled to finally share my thoughts. This episode is a 100 out of 10! Not only did it resolve many of the lingering plot points from the first half of season 4, but it also brilliantly portrayed how two young children can experience the new world in completely different emotional and psychological ways. In fact, through them, we’re shown two distinct approaches to understanding life, death, good, and evil. I also really appreciated the artistic choices and symbolism: the deer as a symbol of innocence, and the black and white smoke as symbols of destruction and closure. Here’s how I interpreted it: when Mika saw the black smoke, she correctly explained to Carol that it meant the fire was still burning, and that when the smoke turns white, it means the flames have gone out. Later, Lizzie saw the white smoke — not having heard the explanation from the sister she had killed — and mistakenly assumed something was burning. This contrast highlights the difference between them: Mika saw the world clearly and could recognize danger, while Lizzie lived in a distorted reality where the line between life and death had vanished. And that’s what truly amazes me — did the writers really think all of this through so deeply, or do such powerful metaphors emerge on their own when a script is written sincerely and with respect for the audience? In any case, the scene with the smoke — like the entire episode — works on multiple levels at once, and that’s exactly why I value it so highly.

Yeah, Carol did not want to be their mother, that would hurt too much. She tried to be their teacher, to give them weapons to protect them. In this world you need all means available not just to kill the walkers but to kill animals for food. She probably would have been able to teach Mica but Lizzie was not right in the head. Lizzie was in dire need to mental therapy but in this world they would not be able to give her that help. They would never be able to trust her with Judith alone and the two of them would not be able to constantly look out for her to keep Lizzie safe either. We didn't get to see the conversation but I think Carol and Tyrees discussed what they could do, it was just not Carol's decision. At least that's what I thought. Carol has changed yes, but so have all of them. And all of them will do mistakes along the way, perhaps going a bit crazy too as we have already seen before. Keeping your humanity is a constant struggle when the world has gone mad. At what price indeed... that's a reccuring question. I do think Carol regrets what she did and realised it was the wrong choice. She absolutley felt it even if she might seem emotionless. The sickness came from the pigs. Lizzie feeding the walkers at the fence is what made so many walkers go to the same place resulting in the fence collapsing.

The deer show the contrast between what Carol's mentorship looks like with Lizzie and Mika and what Rick and Lori's parentage looked like with Carl. Carol has become more hardened because she needed to survive, and she tries to pass it on to the children under her tutelage, even trying to make Mica hunt for a deer, a signifier of innocence (to my mind, at least). But Lori would rather Carl die of his gunshot wound than grow to become cold, and Rick assured her that Carl would keep his innocence because when he awoke a second time from his gunshot-induced coma, he gushed about a deer - something beautiful, innocent...and alive. Carol's style cannot be disregarded as the world really has changed. At this point, if you do not fight, you die - something Rick and Carl also now understand. It just so happens that she has not tried to understand the complexities of her students before trying to toughen them up. Hershel was there to guide Rick regarding Carl, to ensure Carl remains capable but not cold. I believe Carol was not able to translate to Mica that she can become more capable without losing her conscience, and due to losing her daughter (Sophia), she could not bring herself to be a mother to Lizzie, fearing it would soften the girl and make her incapable. This is why Lizzie could not share all of her thoughts with Carol, and thus, the help and guidance she needed to address her mental condition never came. So what did Mica need? A patient, understanding teacher. And what did Lizzie need? A mother. Unfortunately, Carol was neither at this point. And to say the consequences were severe is a HUGE understatement.
