“I TRAINED WITH BTS” | Our Reaction to the VICE Asia Mini-Doc!

We’ve always been enamored by VICE and their particular style of journalism/ coverage of the “wild, weird and wondrous” stories in the far reaches of the world.

Today, we decided to finally check out a VICE video that has been popping up on our YouTube “recommended videos” feed for an entire year!

Very rarely does this world get an inside peak at the life and innermost thoughts of a former BTS trainee.

Here are our takeaways:

1. Bang PD is a genius…duh.

2. Sometimes, talent and skill are just not enough. CHARACTER CHARACTER CHARACTER is everything.

3. What BTS means to Korea cannot (and may never be able to) be quantified.

4. Seeing the downward spiral that Kim Ji-Hun and his family experienced after he was cut as a trainee made us sad, but seeing pictures of BTS attend Kim Ji-Hun’s high school graduation ceremony made us smile.

5. LOVE & EMPATHY ARE IN BTS’ DNA.

ARMY, a few questions for you:

1. What do you think separates those who make it from those who don’t (specifically in the trainee/idol context)?

2. Do you think BTS would be what they are today if Kim Ji-Hun had made the group? Obviously this is a hypothetical question that we’ll never know the answer to, but it’s an interesting thought experiment nonetheless. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

As always, we truly appreciate your love and support (WE’LL CONTINUE SAYING THIS UNTIL THE END OF TIME). Your subscription allows us to produce higher-quality reaction videos, and moves us closer to our goal of doing this full-time! Let us know if you have any questions, feedback, thoughts, etc. at any time! BORAHAE!! 💜💜

"what separates those who make it and those who don't?" that's such a great question. i think it's a little bit of everything. timing, synergy, hard work, luck, connections, persistence, talent, skill, drive, passion, resources, support, mentors... there are so many things that have to align for someone to "make it." is the combination of all of these things chance? is it destiny? or something else entirely? 🤔

I can feel empathy for him for not making it but that's the reality of life. Most trainees don't make it, 90+% groups don't make it even a year after debut, out of the ones that do most don't make it to 7 years mark. I think what separated him from our OT7 is the fact that through the failures, hate, controversies etc the 7 didn't break and give up but he did. His dream was to be a singer and he gave up on it with one setback. I am sorry it didn't work out for him but he didn't even give himself another chance.

Thank you so much for this reaction. It took me a bit to get to this one but I have seen this documentary before. I just want to say that BTS would be 100% different today had he been in place of one of the members. BTS is the way they are - how they relate to Army, each other, and for awareness of the things that they share about. It is a huge scale that cannot be quantified. I appreciate learning about those that trained with them and hearing all of the memories but the way BTS is to Army is because of 7 - OT7 with them as one.
