Earl Sweatshirt - IDLSIDGO - UNCUT ALBUM REACTION

Earl Sweatshirt - IDLSIDGO - UNCUT ALBUM REACTION

Comments

Just now watching this reaction and i’m glad you did it. I feel like i was one of the first people to really request that you do it. i don’t know if it gets easier to listen to necessarily, but i can more often an appreciation for his bars every time i hear. i’d probably put this in my top 10 all time. i was the most depressed point of my life when i first heard this record about 3 years ago. My mom had just committed suicide, i was extremely sick and in a lot of pain because of several surgeries i had to get. i could barely get out of bed for 2 years. so the album title itself was something i connected with immediately. oddly it made me feel better listening to it because i felt like someone else understood how down and out i was. it made me feel like i wasn’t alone in my pain or in my thoughts. it is uncomfortable, and that’s what i like most about it. it’s not supposed to be a happy listen. it’s supposed to bring you down to the dark level where he was at and make you see things from his perspective. i personally think some of the depressing bars on here are some of the best he’s ever had. i definitely think this is one of the most underrated hip hop albums in recent history. i hope it grows on you more in the future, but i wouldn’t be surprised if it didn’t. uncomfortable is definitely what he was going for here

I still pick out tracks from this all the time, but it can be a downer if you go all the way through. Def can see what youre talking about here

I enjoy this album more than Doris souly based on the growth that is shown. Earl transfers from wearing his DOOM influence a little to tightly to beginning to find himself as an artist in this filthy, Lofi, gutter mix that he has perfected.

This is definitely an album that took me 2-3 listens to REALLY really fw, and it became my favorite earl album along with Some Rap Songs.

I’m so glad that you reacted to this A couple of thoughts: 1) No, this album (as well as srs and foc) is not meant to become easier listens as time goes on. It’s meant to be this heavy and I understand why it wasn’t an enjoyable listen. As someone with severe depression, however, doris is easily my least fav earl project. It’s absolutely still a great record but the lighter, boom-bap production doesn’t allow earl’s poetry to hold nearly as much weight as idlsidgo or srs’s production. It’s hard for me to return to doris cuz it doesn’t bring nearly as much comfort or relatability as his later projects do. 2) You should definitely check out “solace” to finish earl szn. It’s the true link between the different eras of earl, combinin the experimental production of new earl with the lyricism of old earl. It’s technically an ep but it runs like a single 10-minute track. Definitely worth a listen.

Might be my favorite project of all time.

I think my feelings of this album and why I find myself coming back to it occasionally is when this first came out I heavily related to and was experiencing a lot of the subject matter discussed on the project, It was reassuring to me as a teenager that I wasn't alone in these feelings, I'm older now and have largely overcome a lot of that angst and depression I experienced. so returning to the music i enjoyed in that period which reflected that state of mind doesn't bring me back to that place but creates a snapshot in my memory of what it felt like being there and feels really reassuring that I've gotten past that. sometimes an album entitled I don't like shit I don't go outside is the perfect signifier of how far i've come when I no longer relate to a lot of the lyrics.

I remember when I was dying for this album to come out and the first time I heard it I was like "wtf is this". But then it just grew on me heavy

Earl just says so much. Knowing he had a heavy hand in production also, with multiple listens the songs just gets so impressive. The layers come through at the perfect times

Any chance we will ever get full uncut reactions to videos you've already done? or would that just not be worth the trouble? Would love to see the full length reactions to albums like Faces, 1999, Cilvia Demo, etc.

Psykopomp

Love the reaction man. Thanks for doing this album. I prefer Doris but this album is still amazing.

Brandon Ulrich

Agree with everything everyone else has said. On a side note, not a fan of the random cuts and interjections, though I appreciate you trying new stuff.

Max

Thanks for another honest reaction, Jon. Understand why this one wasn't for you. Personally this album hits hard for me, but i'm also around the same age as Earl and related a lot to the subject matter at the time it dropped. To me, this album has always felt like a coming of age record. At its core, it's Earl coming to terms with his adulthood and getting older. Losing grandparents, friendships fading, failed relationships, strained relationship with his parents. One lyric that sums this up for me was "I don't know whose house to call home lately".

Aaron Roberts

What you talk about in the middle of the video is the reason I stopped listening to this album. Genuinely one of my favourites, but I was in a very depressed state and this album would make that worse for me. I’ve gotten a lot better since thankfully, but still a tough listen.

This is definitely a difficult listen. To me this album does get better on multiple listens. You start to notice how the beats matchup with the mood/theme of the songs. Doris and IDLSIDGO are my favorite Earl albums.

Christopher Jones

you gotta do EARL to finish off the series

DoctaPeppur

Grief is a top tier rap song.. Also i think that Earl produced the whole album himself, but someone else did the off top production

Lassikko

Yo Jon I've been telling you to check out Wiki and RATKING for almost a year now. Please react to RATKING's album So It Goes. It's a solid project with a nice blend of NY underground boom bap and noise with heavy influences from punk rock and UK grime.

Emilio Rodriguez

Has a line ever hit harder than "when it's harmful where youre going, but the part of you that know it don't give a fuck"??? The answer is yes on your question of it getting better on more listens. I know you don't smoke, but for me this is the perfect album for hotboxing by your car at 2 AM.

Alex VonBerg

This man had zero reaction to "difficult to beat him like a soft dick" hahahha

Alex VonBerg

On first listen I only liked 3 songs, but now this album is in my top 10, earls best IMO

Alan

In response to your question if this gets better on multiple listens, for me personally, yes. I loved this album, it's very dark, however I was in a pretty dark place at the time of listening to this and I enjoy gritty beats as well. I can understand it making you feel uncomfortable, that was the intention of the album, you're diving into his mind, but I personally found it relatable, even more so now dealing with a lot of grief of my own, which is why grief is my favorite track
