Jesse's parents oppress their children. They only accept them if they are the way they want them to be. They don't accept their personalities.

Hi Munchies
first, I Love Chi's face when she used her finger to say third and then realized that is was already the fourth episode !!! I think we have a new face for your thumbnail !
By the way, i'm sorry for your mom. I hope she's alright. Be brave Chi.
And I never watch breaking bad (too young when it come). I'm Discovering it whith you and i'm enjoying it more than i thought (even if some scene still schok me).
Thanks for that.
For you to understand, "Apply yourself" can mean "be focus", "be serious" or "be applied" and all that kind of things. a Debrief is after work or a mission, this when we speak about what happen, what can be done for next time.
Enjoy and have a nice day.

I prefer how season 1 is somewhat grounded vs the later seasons jumping the shark

My parents were strict, I never had the urge to smoke weed.

I won’t spoil anything but one thing that I think will help to keep in mind for all future episodes is the word “pride”.
Pride is considered a sin because it can lead someone to make arrogant and foolish decisions, placing themselves over others. It also makes one feel bitter and resentful if they don’t feel their achievements, merit, or skill are recognized.
Pride is often considered the basis that leads to other sins.
It’s a central theme for this show and if you ever have a question why someone is doing something or why they aren’t doing something, just remember “pride”

When I see the thumbnail, it makes me think it might be time to update the Movie Munchies profile picture with the new members.😅
I'm not a native English speaker, but I think "apply yourself" means something like work harder, or focus more. Something you say to someone who has talent but isn't using it.
I'm glad you're enjoying the series so far; it's going to get even better.
That was a great reaction, ladies, as always.💜

Hello,
Love your reactions. There are a couple cultural differences I wanted to mention to explain some things.
The reason the little kid is probably using weed is because the overly strict parents and that weed use is not that serious in America. Marijuana is legal in 24 out of 50 states in the USA. It is treated like alcohol and the taxes from it funds education. During the time setting of this show weed is still not legal but it is ok for medical use in many states so people are relaxing to it. The parents being very religious so the little brother wants to rebel. Especially since it is not normal in America for a kid to be pushed by parents to do so well academically. I am Korean born in America with lots of Asian friends including Vietnamese. So I saw the difference in how Western parents treated education from how Eastern cultures treat it. My Mexican friends have NEVER ONCE had a bad dream about failing an exam. That's not a nightmare for them. I know every Asian student has.
Another thing I want to mention is I noticed from the last episode that you thought Domingo was rich because his parents owned a furniture shop. That is not always true. It is pretty easy to start a business in America. Not as easy maintaining the business long term but having one that makes just enough to live is common (before this current economy) around the time period of this show.

It’s the main image for their Patreon, maybe they forgot to put in a proper thumbnail…?

the first season is maybe the weakest of this tv show, but needed for buildup of course, but love the whole thing

If you remember when you reacted to The Departed with Leo Dicaprio they often talked about who was "the rat". When they say "Rat out" in this show, they mean someone who would inform the cops about the criminal activity of other people/criminals, but the phrase can also be used in a general since of "you told on me".
When Jessie is going through his childhood memories, and he finds the test that Walter White graded and gave him an F. It also has the note "APPLY Yourself". This is a note you might get from a teacher if they know you are capable and smart enough but you're just not trying.
The writing on this show is very good, but I think it gets even better as they go and the writers really start to understand the actors.
Hank, the brother-in-law, is an interesting character, because he's an asshole, but redeems himself by being a dependable-asshole.
