In the movie language spoken by the Vietnamese American characters is Hmong, not Vietnamese. The actors who spoke Hmong were Hmong speakers, and some of their lines were improvised. While the script was written in English, the actors improvised some of the Hmong dialogue on set. Dyane Hang Garvey served as a cultural consultant, providing input on names, traditions, and translations.
The Hmong characters in the film were played by real Hmong-speaking actors, which was a departure from Hollywood's typical practice of using actors who mimic the language. Some Hmong actors expressed that their portrayal in the film was not always accurate and that some important lines were not subtitled, leading to a skewed perception of the Hmong community.
While the Hmong characters did not speak Vietnamese, the film does feature a Vietnamese character named Tao, who communicates with Walt Kowalski in English and is also seen speaking to his girlfriend in Hmong.

Thank you for the reaction, it was a very emotionally charged film. A very strong portrait of the difficulties immigrants being displaced by conflict, but finding a home in America. As well as the somewhat flawed view of previous generations views from living through many wars. But to see them both grow to live and love one another and the strong bonds developed in such a short time makes this film beautiful. Well done, Mr. Kowalski for this great movie :)

Chi doesn’t cry in many movies, or when she does it’s just a little cry. Chi was sobbing like Hella in this one! That shows this is a powerful emotional movie.

Movies are meant to evoke strong emotions. They should make you cry, fill you with joy, or even make you angry. They inspire you to question things you thought you understood. That is the essence of cinema. If you aren’t fully immersing yourself in the film, then what’s the point? Keep letting go and allow yourself to dive into the movies. This is why we appreciate watching your reactions; we get to relive the experience through you.
By the way, the actor who played "Thao" wasn't that great at the time. And just a heads up: don't watch "Mystic River" or "Million Dollar Baby" if you want to avoid shedding tears—(watch both of them)

One more thing, not related to this movie at all but since there isn't a thread for suggestions I thought that I would put this here... I'm watching a lot of your older content because I've run out of everything else that you've put out 🙂. I see that you love Jim Carrey but you never covered one of his best movies: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It's a really different role for him. It's not a comedy it's a dramatic role and he's fantastic in it. You should add that to your list for sure.

This movie is always hard to watch for me. Knowing what happens at the end doesn't make it any easier to watch.
In fact, for me it makes the good moments in the movie harder to enjoy.
Really great work by Clint Eastwood, in my opinion this is his best movie.

The heart aches seeing our strong Chi cry 😭😭😭😭 A beautiful film seeing Wally and Toads friendship. And Wally opening up to his neighbours.. And Toad coming out of his shell. And Sue, she really brought everyone together with her bright personality.

I think there are many symbolic themes in this movie. In the beginning they had the funeral for Walt's wife and next door they were celebrating the birth of a new baby. It represents the general theme of life and death in the movie. Then Walt died so that Thao could live his life in peace.
The Gran Torino symbolizes American culture and industry. That's why Walt gave it to Thao, after teaching him how to live and work in America.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. Chi is my favorite character, and Katie looks just like Youa.

There are many Hmong and Vietnamese people living in America. I love how this movie portrays the Asian-American families and community. It feels so realistic. Unfortunately, many Asian people live in parts of America that are high in crime.

There’s an absolutely exceptional movie called ‘Dead Man’s Shoes’ which I can’t recommend highly enough. Themes running through this movie that align slightly.
In (my humble!) opinion, Dead Man’s Shoes is one of the best movies ever out of the U.K.. Impossible to watch the first time and not cry.
I recommend it to anyone - hopefully ‘The Munchies!’ if they want to watch it (after The Untouchables 🙂).
Just don’t read up about it before you watch it - you’ll understand why after 🥲
(*hopefully more UK independent movies from Munchies. God I’d love those reactions! 😂🤞🏻)

I'm not going to pretend to be an expert So forgive me if I get anything wrong but, Thao Vang Lor, Is the character's full name And as far as I know it is a Hmong name not Chinese or Vietnamese Even if it might sound similar.
The Americans used the Hmong, under General Vang Pao, as a secret army in Laos to fight communists, disrupt the Ho Chi Minh Trail, and assist U.S. forces. The Ho Chi Minh Trail was a critical supply route that allowed North Vietnam to receive weapons and supplies from the Soviet Union and China, making it a key U.S. target. The Hmong launched attacks and sabotage missions to weaken North Vietnamese supply lines. However, when the war ended, the U.S. withdrew, leaving the Hmong to face persecution, exile, or death under the new communist regime in Laos. Many fled as refugees to Thailand, often crossing the dangerous Mekong River, before being relocated to the United States, France, Canada, Australia, and Germany, while others remained stateless or in hiding in Laos.
