Apollo 13 Reaction

Apollo 13 Reaction

Comments

When Fred figured the numbers for only two people it was not because he was "mean". That was the original mission, for Fred and Jim to get on the LEM and land on the moon while Jack stayed on the CM. But now they all were in the LEM. So it was not a selfish thing.

Matt Jamison

Since I've seen an actor from it in this movie, I would definitely recommend Mission To Mars if you want to see another movie about space exploration, but it takes place in the near future :) (2 years from now actually but the movie is released in 2000)

Emir Batu AlgΔ±n

That comment was staged. (Though I admit, that can be an interesting rabbit hole to go down... if one has the free time and surplus mental bandwidth.)

S_Vive

Hmmm, that Age of Pioneers/Spacewalker does look good, and I hadn't known of it before. Thanks for its mention.

S_Vive

Yes

Gregory A Mann

Apollo 1 is where they burned up in the capsule due to a fire right?

Chandler Record

The Apollo 11 mission was the first to LAND on the moon. The previous missions were to test each part of the mission. The had to test the LEM and docking procedures and slingshot around the back of the moon. The only failures were Apollo 1 (the fire on the launch pad) and Apollo 13. The Saturn 5 rocket needed several tests with it's huge engines as well.

Gregory A Mann

No it wasn't.

Prometheus

If you folks like space shows, you should watch the TV series "From the Earth to the Moon" and also the Russian movie "Age of Pioneers" (US title "Spacewalker"). Also, the Russian film "Gagarin" is good. In my opinion, "Age of Pioneers" is the best movie ever made about the space race.

Prometheus

Interesting fact: Much of the American rocket/space/Apollo program was heavily influenced or outright headed by former Nazi scientists and engineers captured in Germany at the end of WW2. The most influential was Wernher von Braun who was the lead designer of the Saturn series rockets used for Apollo. He was a member of the Nazi party and designed the V2 rocket used against England during WW2. Slave labor was used to build the V2 rockets......🫑

Manospondylus

Another classic!

The way they did launches up until recently have changed a great deal. I remember the Challenger explosion in 1986 and the other shuttle that broke apart during reentry several years later. The launches now, have reusable engines that can land on a ship or platform instead of splashing down in the water. Pretty cool stuff done by some pretty smart people. I used to listen to the conversations on the ISS or Discovery missions on my police scanner. ....anyway fun reaction. take care and have fun.

bernard henderson

One can go to the NASA website and see live footage of the people on the international Space Station. You can also see the Space X launches live as well. Pretty cool. Some fail and some work. We currently have two astronauts stuck on the ISS waiting to be rescued due to some hatch failure that happened while docking. I don't remember what happened exactly, but they are still up there as unscheduled guests until further notice.

If you want to see freddo again watch Twister

Classic Movie, great reaction ladies!πŸ’œ

RIP Bill Paxton! One of the many pieces who made this film one of the greatest of all time!

And they call that plane the Vomit Comet. lol.

*Regarding the comment Chi made at the end of the video. Everyone understands you're still learning the English Language and American/Western Culture. I can personally relate, because I'm currently learning Chinese language/culture. It's commendable to put yourself out there with these reactions. I was reminded of a particular quote: β€œMan cannot discover new oceans, unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.” ~ AndrΓ© Gide wish you well on your continued journey

Those scenes in zero-G were filmed on a specially modified airplane used by NASA. if you fly the right curve at the right speed you can create about 30 seconds of weightlessness. Test of filming in zero-G: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IAAjk3QdU8 Longer behind-the-scenes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Kld61n8ZDI

Katie is a great addition to the channel.

Paul De'Armond

And watching this on Friday the 13th. _(-_-)_

A great opportunity that you being present at Lovell's book conference. In the late 90s & early 00s back east I liked attending certain historical & biographical book release events, but never of any comparable prominence as that. I remember that around the time of seeing the film, I also became aware of mini-series From the Earth To the Moon and found it to be enjoyably informative in a similarly dramatised format.

S_Vive

Fun fact, the older gentleman who salutes and shakes Tom Hank's hand at 2:14:35 is the real Jim Lovell, the man Tom Hank's is portraying in the movie.

Brandon

Even knowing the outcome of this movie it still creates great tension. Another great Space Movie is called Gravity it is fictional but very exciting. Also there is a great TV series called The Expanse that mixes space, politics, and action. Maybe something to consider for a future reaction.

colin summers

Growing up my uncle(dads brother) let us stay at his beach house in Florida just a few miles from the launch pad. We were there for two space shuttle launches. One at night. One of the most memorable things I've ever seen or heard.

Manospondylus

The moon landing was staged.

Paul De'Armond

Just a major film to miss, from several angles... with it being the ladies' introduction to Kevin Bacon (I think) and one of my all-time favorite actors, Ed Harris.

S_Vive

I was fortunate enough to attend a conference where Jim Lovell spoke after he wrote this book and before the movie came out. It was fascinating to hear him talk about these events. Chi mentioned how calm they were in the movie, but they were even more calm than what was portrayed. They dramatized the arguing in the module because they wanted to add drama to the film. In reality, they never argued but just worked the problem. This is one of the most historically accurate movies out there. It could almost be a documentary it is so true to the events.

Jeffrey Roberts

This is a major Tom Hanks (et al.) film for Hella to miss out on. Her absence is, as always, unfortunate.

S_Vive

I forgot Tom Hanks and Gary Sinise were also in this movie. They were both in Forrest Gump. Funny that you posted this on Friday the 13th.

Grumpy Monk

Jim and Fred are still alive, both in their 90s. Can you imagine if you knew them ever complaining about a problem? You talk about dealing with a flat tire, and they're looking at you like, "Yeah, I was in a tiny module in space for a week and spent the whole time fixing problem after problem while freezing and thinking I might die at any moment. Sorry you had to wait a few minutes for AAA or change your own tire. That must have been hard." Perspective.

Calbah

One of my favorites! Looking forward to watching the full reaction here on Patreon!

Michael Gilbrook

I haven’t seen this one in a hot minute! It’s gonna be a fun one after work

Tyler T

Oooooo fun! I've been hoping you'd watch this one at some point. Minus some of the human drama, it's actually a very historically accurate movie. One of my favorites! The voice recordings from the original mission are freely available and quite interesting to listen to. The Saturn V rocket was just an incredible feat of engineering. Looking forward to watching this one! The missions before Apollo 11 were testing different phases of flight. Some tested the basic launch vehicle, some tested the ability to orbit earth and re-enter the atmosphere, some tested the ability to get to the moon and back without landing, and so on. In that sense, they weren't failures, just missions meant to safely test specific parts of the larger mission.
