If I may request, please watch "Hero" With Jet Li. I truly think it would get a lot of views and I think you guys would do a great job. To add, my wife is Vietnamese/Chinese and it is one of her favourite movies.

If I could please request you all react to the βShogunβ tv show. It is only 10 episodes but it is one of the greatest shows ever about samuraiβs. Would love to see your comments about it after you watched the Last Samurai movie!

Hella and Tien were challenged & drained in the long viewing of this one... and will likely sleep good the night afterwards.

They didn't seem to catch that Nobutada is Katsumoto's son.
Ah, ok now they did.

And they missed at the beginning that Katsumoto serves the Emperor.
This is proving to be a difficult film for them to absorb. But we all miss certain things that others see or see differently, and vice versa.
(No slight to Hella or Tien; they are multilingual after all, so obviously quite smart... just unfortunate that we get the benefit of their observations in real-time but they have to wait for ours until afterwards.)

Crud, now they missed/misunderstood Katsumoto essentially telling Nathan, just before they all leave for Tokyo, that he was no longer considered as his Enemy.

Heh... if I had just viewed a few minutes further I would have seen that the ladies caught on about who Taka is.

When you initially posted this, I wasn't sure why you had to add that last sentence... but, ah... so unfortunate that the ladies misinterpreted Nathan's military service past as having been in Japan.
I'm 40mins in and I can't see how they're going to be set straight on this mistaken detail, and suspect this misunderstanding will stay with them through the whole of the film.
This is one of those instances where I find I wish I was there viewing it with them.
Also, I hope they will not miss that Taka is (was) the wife of the samurai Nathan killed just before being taken captive. So important to how things develop.

This movie is set in 1876, about 11 years after the end of the American Civil War. Around that time the US was expanding westward and conquering land from the native inhabitants. This often involved mass slaughters. The main character seems to have been a veteran of those wars. And the man he told he would 'gladly kill for free' was probably his commander during those events.
There had never been a war between Japan and the US at this point.

This movie is SO very like the movie The 300 Spartans(1962), and the movie 300(2007). Hopelessly outnumbered, 300 Spartans held off the Persian attack for 2 days and 1 morning. The professor Heroditus says that instead of surrender, The Spartans chose to ATTACK on their last day as they refused to surrender. All 300 died along with their leader, King Leonidas. 300 did die, but history claims that there were Thespians, Thebans, and volunteers, totaling about 6,000. The Persians were 1 million strong. Who knows for sure?

Matsumoto was based on the real Saigo takamori. It should be noted samurai were a class of people and the new meiji government was increasingly more and more discrimitory to samurai . Effectively common people that would have been under samurai in the past were gaining power and did not want samurai around cuz they felt they were a threat to their new power. They also probably seen the samurai as their oppressors in a way prior to all of this in 1868 there was a civil war were the shogunate that had ruled Japan for hundreds of years fought against the people wanting to take power Matsumoto character fought against the shogun his side won wich is were the story starts with the new mejij governments but sumari were fighting on both sides
