Lay of the Land 0.12.0 The Caves Update
Added 2025-05-10 04:40:12 +0000 UTCHey everyone,
The Caves Update is here and brings a whole new layer to the game (literally). It's not just caves however, this updates brings many other new changes, additions, fixes and improvements.
I hope you enjoy the update and thank you all so much for the support :)
Caves
Caves are here. You can find entrances to these labyrinthian caverns dotted around the landscape. They provide easy access to ores and other resources.
Each biome has its own unique cave biome.
Crystal Caves
Found in the Mystical Forest these caves feature large glowing crystals of various vibrant colors.
Lost Caves
Found in the Outback Canyons these sandstone caves feature frequent pockets and pillars of sand/gravel, vines hanging from the ceiling and the dry remnants of long dead vegetation.
Wet Caves
Found in the Mushroom Swamp these caves are filled with roots, vines, frequent pools of water and various plants that have made this damp environment their home.
Metalworking
Metal items such as weapons and tools are now craftable through the use of a Smeltery. The Smeltery is used to melt down metal ore and to cast metal components by pouring the molten metal into moulds of various shapes.
Horses
Rideable horses are now in the game. Now you can traverse the world with your 4 legged companion. They can be found in all biomes except the Volcano and can be tamed/named by feeding them food such as carrots, grass etc. Tamed horses will not despawn or wander very far from where you leave them.
Overhauled Interaction System
The games interaction system has been overhauled. You now physically interact with objects such as campfires, anvils etc to perform actions instead of using a generic UI system.
I have also made usability improvements to the crafting system to reduce the number of actions needed to craft items.
New Music
The game now has all new music. All the music in the game is now fine to use in your videos/streams of the game without being copyright claimed.
Hardware Raytracing
The game now supports the hardware raytracing path for lumen global illumination. This improves the quality of global illumination and can even improve performance over software raytracing in some scenarios on newer GPU's such as Nvidia 40 series or newer.
Hardware Raytracing can of course can be disabled.

Wet Caves Biome
Lost Caves Biome
Underground Strata Generation (pockets of dirt, sand etc)
Ore Generation
AI
Horse (tamable and rideable, feed horse grass to tame and regenerate their health faster)
Support for tamed creatures
Support for rideable creatures
New ai spawning system that allows for monsters to spawn underground and for ai to respawn over time if they are killed and the player is not moving through the world
Useables
Smeltery. Used for the refinement of ores and the production of metal items.
Fig Door
Doors now always open away from the player
Doors no longer require iron to craft
Many more items can now be used as fuel in the Kiln/Smeltery
Interaction/UI
Can now craft directly from inventory by mousing over placed items and pressing the crafting key
Overhauled interaction system with useable (campfires, kilns etc). Items are now placed on the useable similar to the crafting system. e.g physically place raw food into a campfire to cook.
Items are now repaired by placing them on an anvil and hitting them with a hammer
Can now pick up items directly off useables
Can now pick up dropped items directly from inventory with left click.
Can also shift click dropped items/items in useables directly into inventory
Crafting recipes in the guide are now sorted better

Raytracing Support
Hardware raytracing support
Improves global illumination quality
Can potentially improve global illumination performance on Nvidia 40 series or newer
Voxel
Voxel physics performance improvements
Voxel type data is now tightly packed halving voxel type data memory usage and improving cache coherency
Sand simulation performance improvements
Moving sand voxels will now remove vegetation
Voxel physics queries will now remove floating vegetation
Misc
Optimized weather effects
Adjusted light produced by fire to be less saturated
Increased size of bounds useables/items pickups check to see if they should simulate physics
Decreased steam thruster sound volume
Improved visibility at night/dawn/dusk when weather is not clear
Slightly tweaked sunlight/skylight/fog colors
Increased density of mist from flowing water
Crafting recipes are now unlocked if the player picks up their produced item not just the ingredients
Various memory and performance optimizations
Fixes
Fixed slow deer run animation
Fixed equipped items clipping through walls
Fixed items not switching to their broken state mesh when broken
Fixed voxel meshes sometimes not updating on the edge of voxel edits
(potentially) Fixed objects sometimes falling through ground as the player traverses the world
Fixed voxel meshes sometimes being cleared before their higher or lower LOD has actually been rendered. This mostly manifested as a flicker when traversing the world
Fixed infinite item exploit where you could hit a voxel object such as an oak barrel with a tool without breaking it to gather a few voxels then picking it up again, placing it down again and repeating.
Comments
I hate to disappoint but the game won't have multiplayer or a redstone like mechanic. That's not really the kind of game I'm making

2025-05-14 23:09:57 +0000 UTCI would love to see a server with 1000s of people on at a time would this be possible? You know how Minecraft has redstone and slimeblock machines could this game have many machines?

2025-05-13 06:22:08 +0000 UTCI don't have any plans for the crystals at the moment they're just decorative

2025-05-12 07:42:31 +0000 UTCI just joined the patreon and it seems this was the perfect time to hop on. I love the caves' aesthetic, super mysterious. I wonder if there are any plans for the crystals to become a material for weapons construction or anything like that?
