Devlog 1: How the Nicest Person in the World made a Mean Quarter Demon

If you're not aware, Aila is probably one of the nicest people in the world. Take a look at her stream and you will find her encouraging everyone to do their thing, practice their skill, and be better in general.  It's quite inspirational.

Except one person.

Early in the game's development, we plotted out that the main character should meet someone who gives him the lowdown on the girls quickly rather than it being a mystery.  This person would be a part of an organization that protected humans and knew what the girls were, a Demon Hunter (Who eventually became Naomi).  She'd tell him that he should go home and then be his wingman as he tried to, in her own words, get "his dick wet".

As writer, I imagined her as professional and questioning the main character's actions when they started, but eventually they'd become friends.

I passed the first draft off to Aila to see what she thought.

"I think she should be meaner."

...meaner?

I didn't quite know how to do meaner.  I redid it where she had some distain for the MC.  That she really couldn't understand why he wanted to save the girls, but eventually realized it was because he was a good person.

"She really should be meaner"

But he had to listen to her at some point, right?  If she was too mean, he wouldn't listen to her would he?  I made it so that after she found out he still wanted to take the girls out she'd call him an idiot.

"No, she should start off mean"

It was genuinely surprising to me that Aila, whom I've known for years as a super nice person, kept pushing the mean button an Naomi.

And it was really this she kept pushing on. I didn't quite get it.  But after several iterations of her, she started to take shape. More Surly, more punk rock, still an ardent professional, but someone who knew how to use the word 'Fuck' and mean it.  And once we did our voice casting and found Visi, we knew we had our match.
