Yess. (I'm not trying to correct ur comment, simply adding to it with examples) There are exceptions though worth mentioning , koreans who bring alot to their country. I think there was a soccer player who brought pride+more to skorea after winning a big game. and There have been officials who mentioned that bts have been bringing in lots of pride, attention and money to their economy through music/revenues,business and tourism, so many thought that bts could be exempted from doing mandatory service. Yet bts have been vocal that they dont want ppl discussing this about them or pushing decisions without it having been settled. They also seemed keen on joining even if they get exemption. It's a reason many fans stop bringing it up due to the guys not being happy about ppl pushing the topic. I also heard that there were different jobs or positions the men can go to like if they have injuries or history of poor health, pains or something.

Him going to the military is not by choice btw. In South Korea it’s mandatory for males 18-28 to serve at least 2 years in the military. However if I’m not mistaken most Kpop idols don’t serve the full 2 years.

In Korea, all men have to enlist in the military for at least 18 months before they turn 32 (I believe it’s 32 it might be 30 lol). So at some point, every Korean male idol has to enlist thus their groups being on hiatus depending on the circumstances (Like SHINee [Taemins group] are or were in the military at the moment). So like for example, since NCT consists of not just Korean members (American, Thai, Japanese, Chinese) the ones that don’t have to enlist will most likely make new sub units or release more solo work. And pretty soon BTS’ oldest Jin is going to enlist since he is almost 30. There haven’t been any official announcements tho
