Yes, they’re a Kpop group. Their name is Ateez (pronounced “a-tease” in case you were wondering but not that important) but this video was made when they were still training to become Ateez. Basically all Kpop idols go through a training period (hence “trainees”) where they basically practice non stop (sometimes for 24 hours straight in the dance practice room) where they learn dance, vocals, rapping, stage presence, how to handle interviews, etc. The company will place them under the pressure of these things as a training method so that once they debut as idols they’ll be ready for the pressures in real life. Ateez come from a company called KQ Entertainment that is a little more lenient than most companies in terms of strict regulations and training. However, you shouldn’t overlook Ateez. All their hard work comes from THEM. Just because they didn’t have the company breathing down their necks doesn’t mean they aren’t talented. In fact, it’s more commendable to know that they don’t HAVE to put in as much work as they do. They chose to do so on their own. They debuted October 24th, 2018 (8 members) so by the Kpop standard (and here as well) they’re still “rookies”. They’ve garnered many fans because of their sheer talent and dedication despite them still having that rookie title.
Anyway, “KQ Fellaz” is what they were known by before they debuted as “Ateez”. They were still training and therefore didn’t have a for sure name for the group yet. The name “KQ Fellaz” was obviously created stemming from their company. They made a few dance videos like this to gain more attention before debut and it worked in their favor seeing as their debut was certainly one of the most memorable of that year.
My guess is someone showed you this because you’ve shown an interest in the dancing in kpop before and Ateez are definitely notable dancers. This video was tame but my guess is that it was requested because in kpop (especially for rookies) it’s kind of a no-no for them to use American music with cursing or suggestive lyrics and they did a dance cover to a friggin Famous Dex song. 💀 So while it’s not “oh, shiiiii, controversial” here in the states, it’s definitely a little unexpected in South Korea and deemed by many (conservatives) a questionable song to dance to.
Sorry for the long ass comment. 💀 love your reactions and your honest opinions🧡
