He wants everyone to recognize that "the new god" is behind them, not just random events. For example, when a bad person dies of a heart attack, it’s meant to signal that Kira is responsible.

With his growing god complex, he starts to see anyone who opposes him as evil, which gives him the justification to kill them, even if they’re actually good.

He wanted the world to know that there is someone killing criminals. Being creative with the deaths would have made all the killings look like accidents and not the work of a righteous vigilante or deity.

He wants to be known as God but at the same time he doesn't want to be caught
