I felt this one was more about the hopelessness and loneliness rather than fear. I think the monster was a mad copy of the father that he talked to in the end. Outside the house you see 3 piles of clothing and 3 holes in the wall with bloody footprints leading into them. 2 small ones for his boys and one large, for him.
