The first one or two times he used the death note were outright traumatic for him, he couldn't reconcile his moral values and sense of justice with the fact that he killed two people, forgoing police, judge and jury. So he fractured. A new personality took shape in his mind, one who solved the moral dilemma he was in by saying "I was chosen to use this power to rid the world of evil, I did the right thing". One who kept responding to the name Light but thought of itself more like a god, or at the very least chosen by god. Once he got rid of the notebook his memories regarding it were erased, or locked away or whatever, and with them, so was Kira. Light Yagami was in control again, and he really wouldn't do anything Kira did, because he respects his fellow humans as equals. I am not a studied Psychologist, so maybe my theory isn't entirely psychologically accurate, but at least to me it seems plausible.
