She HAD to believe he was dead because if he wasnt then it would have meant she needed to go look for and save her brother, who she absolutely loved, and she couldnt do that because she needed to stay and work the farm and protect her mother. She was strong, she was smart, she had the blood of Thors. She could have been a warrior and found Thorfinn. She needed to be in Iceland. She probably had some kind of cognitive dissonance to force herself to stay in this role.
