With the guests thing, they mentioned it in a prior episode - the guard force is a mercenary encampment hired by Ketil. But these people are thieves, murderers, etc and dont even use their own names because their crimes are so bad. They don't like being called bad things, and even mercenary sounds bad. So they're "guests" of Ketil.
