Vinland Saga 1x24

The end of the beginning!

I really love how uniquely Yukimura structured this story. Normally in a revenge story, the story builds up to the climactic moment where the character chooses to either accomplish their revenge or embrace forgiveness, and that is the final beat of the story. But this story instead STARTS with the main character completing (*) his revenge....And then says now what? Great. The person you hate is dead. Now what? What happens NEXT? What happens when you build your whole life around something and find out that thing is just vapor? When you realize you had the wrong goals only after you accomplished them and now you have to pick up the pieces? Like you said, Thorfinn is a totally static character in the prologue, and I think that is absolutely the author's intent. Because Thorfinn has yet to choose to live for anything. He's been a dead man walking, and the length of time he goes without any character growth just accentuates that. What does it mean to be alive? To be human? All ahead in Season 2. Now it begins!

I remember going through this series for the first time, knowing two seasons existed, thinking "yeah this must be about halfway I think," only to then suddenly see "END OF THE PROLOGUE" boldly shown on the screen in all caps. Such a weird feeling looking back. Also fun fact, this episode is the fourth highest rated TV episode of all time on IMDB. My favorite scene of this season is in this episode, where Askeladd fully acts as a father to Thorfinn and asks him how he will live his life. On the moment just before, where Askeladd shouted to him "stay back, Thorfinn!" Yukimura had something really interesting to say. "I wasn't really sure how Askeladd felt about Thorfinn. Askeladd might not have cared in the slightest if Thorfinn had died anytime, anywhere. But, when he was on the verge of the end of his life, he made sure Thorfinn didn't come with him. He pushed Thorfinn away thinking he shouldn't have to die with him. And to my surprise, I hadn't thought about him like that right up until I was going to write this scene. They were Askeladd's own words. I can't think otherwise. It's a wonder, but Askeladd actually said it. It's really weird. That was a peculiar experience. I remember it well." I can't imagine writing a character with so much depth that the author almost doesn't have to write anymore. The words just come out of that character's own mouth. No matter what Yukimura thought, those were the words that Askeladd had to say in that moment; they were his own. Anyway, can't wait for season 2. The story is finally beginning for real!
