I love how in that final scene of Thorfinn reflecting on his past, he didn't go further back in time than after he was on the boat with Askeladd. By this point, his memory physically doesn't even go back far enough to remember the times with his actual father, or why he even wants to avenge him in the first place. He only remembers his hatred, without even considering where it came from. In a way a bit similar to Askeladd. For as much as he hates the people around him, there's nobody he hates more than himself. Knowing the way this season plays out gives so much more weight to the interaction Thors and Askeladd had in ep4; he knew he would change if he went with Thors back then. Both knew that was never an option though.
