Bjorn was dying anyways. Atli's attack reached his stomach and it was infected, and he would have died a painful horrible slow death. The duel was to let him die better and with a sword in his hand so he could go to Valhalla. But he dropped his sword in the end and gave up Valhalla so he could hold on to Askeladd, his friend.
