I would like to read your book

Eleonora Frizorger

Thank you for your videos! They made me so happy

ere couldn't protect hanji because as he told Armand by that point the founding had begun messing with his head

You probably caught this but the last interaction with Mueller was a full circle character arc for Armin from episode 9 of the show when Captain Woermann who was operating in fear was demanding proof that Armin/Eren/Mikasa were human at the threat of cannon fire. The question was the same in both situations - “prove to me that you are human.” You will probably disagree with my conclusion, but Armin’s answers in both situations stayed the same, and I think it was the show telling us that, of the main characters, he was the one that remained human through the entire show. Also another note in the Timelapse of the tree, we see Mikasa and the family she has occasionally go up to the tree, but never Armin. Then after Mikasa dies and is presumably buried under the tree with Eren, the last person to visit the graves looks like an elderly Armin (difficult to tell obviously but it looks intentionally like him). Armin was always the last one to get to the tree when he, Eren, and Mikasa raced.

I finally watched it. Thank you for your time and effort doing the reactions! You missed couple things - Hitch yawning amongst the military at the end. - the Goat titan is Ksaver and in my theory, beast titan animals are based on the Chinese Zodiac - Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat (Ksaver), Monkey (Zeke), Rooster (Falco), Dog, Pig - in order. That is why we saw the snake titan, I think.. I don't know if this is related that the boy at the end was with his dog. I think that Eren was the one to show Mikasa the alternative memory at the very end. He went to see his important people and temporarily erased their memories but this doesn't work on Ackerman so he saw Mikasa at the very end as the final battle was happening and they spent the last time together.. He probably told her where he was as when she came back, she knew that Eren was inside of the mouth. But that was my understanding and you showed me another way of seeing things. There is a lot of speculation that Mikasa and Jean got married after 10 years ( the last ending credit scene has 10 years in a few seconds, and there are some families visiting the tree, then Mikasa seemed to be wearing a ring when she passed away). Some scenes are more visible on manga. Also, I would like to point out that the story goes back to the beginning, as Armin was narrating the anime from the episode 1 and Eren did say that Armin was the one to save the world to Levi when they had to choose between Erwin and Armin in season 3. Was Tumir slave to be loved? So that is my quick thoughts on this episode - I hope these make sense - I mean, this msg explains what I wanted to say!

i recommend Attack on Titan - 'Call Your Name' ost with Lyrics

I think you should do openings and endings rankings someday. You missed S4P2's OP and ED which was IMO one of the best.

Thank you from Italy for accompanying through this journey the 10th time. I loved how you eviscerated the meanings of this story and how you analyzed it, loved how you didn't limit yourself to just reacting. Many people hate Gabi, hate the ending, and simply don't understand the story; but you fully understood it. Attack on Titan accompanied me for more than 10 years of my life, since I went to Elementary School, and now I'm in my last year of University. It changed my life and the way I look at things, and for that reason thank you, thank you for being the person that you are, it has been interesting hearing your thoughts and analysis. Hope to accompany you through more journeys and may you have a nice life, a big hug from Italy. If I can suggest you to react to something, there is an editor that made quite some edits on AoT and they're beautifully done, they're a summary of the story, and there is one in particular I would like you to react, here's the link: "Our Story" https://youtu.be/k5IJgsNGM7M?si=fiB0HCgPaBD6IW7k

Xano

Agreed. He should have gotten an Nobel Prize for it, I think.

M U

Yes, though he said he would delete her memories if she did something, so yeah, she is passively complicit but contrary to floch she was blackmailed. Still shitty, yes. :D

M U

Yes, definitly something toher than titans. =)

M U

I like your point on how everyone has hateful thoughts like Eren sometimes. I think a quote from Isayama that is very important in regards to this, and the ending is when he was asked which character he thought reflected him the most: Isayama: "I initially thought perhaps Armin, but lately, I'd say it's maybe Eren after all. Initially, I believed this type of character was necessary for the story so I wrote him in, but actually, with him came something of a feeling, that he was a part of an inner me that I didn't really want to see." The ending to Eren Yeager is one of my favorites because it exposes what type of person is behind hateful thoughts like this, an broken angry child who thought taking the easy way out and wiping everything away would solve all his problems.

skitalks

Always trust in Isayama! Dude is seriously like the modern equivalent of Shakespeare.

Hippopi

For me, Ymir learned from Mikasa how to let go of those you love, particularly when they're bad for you or a danger in general. It's basically saying that your feelings are valid and real to you at the time, but there comes a time where eventually you have to let go of that unhealthy connection.

Hippopi

I didn't like the manga ending for a couple of relatively minor reasons, but the anime ending was a massive improvement and I loved it.

Hippopi

Another note, regarding the final scene with the boy and the tree, the power of titans and the creation of the paths was Ymir’s doing. IF that tree does contain Deus ex Parasite then the power obtained will likewise be different, perhaps there is hope since the boy might not be a horrifically traumatised child on the verge of death like Ymir was?

Siege XIII

Important note, Historia was complicit, she knew as much as Floch did, she knew about Eren’s plan several years in advance and allowed it to happen - which is why she acknowledged at the end that the world isn’t the way it is because of Eren alone, she knows that she at least could have changed things but chose not to.

Siege XIII

Well, he says that, but is that him saying it or because he saw Historia in the future? I would like to think it was both, as their 3x07 moment was one of the best in the show and I would like to think that created a deep bond between them. Also agree, titans were "ymirs manifestation of life" :D

M U

i think there is also a slight misunderstanding you have with eren caring for historia in the others even tho you say he didn’t care for her historias safety was one of the reasons he refused the 50 year plan and was also stated multiple times about not wanting her to be bred like a cow to keep royal titans. Side note is is also highly likely the titans don’t return due to ymir having specific conditions that made titans differentiating from the potential goals boys

Aurora

i just wanna say this was an amazing summary, i’ll definitely be saving this i’m pretty well informed about the ending and its context you put it into really reasonable and easy to swallow info, cheers to you

Aurora

It took maybe a season for me to warm up to Peter Capaldi, but holy crap the final season of his arc blew me away. “Heaven Sent” is a masterclass in writing and acting, and what happens when the two combine. Much like many scenes in AoT.

Don Pham

Yes, 100% agree, brilliant summary. I would not disagree with a single point here, I think, well written! =)

M U

Mine too. What an actor as well! =)

M U

Oh, my Patreon was slow to update haha, everyone already said what I did, my bad

Kevin

I disagree from everything I’ve seen. There was a small vocal minority that hated the manga ending, but the anime largely fixed it and I’ve seen almost all positive reception

Kevin

The 12th doctor is my favorite

Don Pham

It was really 50/50 but depending on which bubble of the fandom you were part of at that time it might have felt different, especially reddit (titanfolk sub reddit) was overwhelmingly negative

I made this comment somewhere else on Ymir but I'll just copy it here. You got a lot of it yourself though. Kinda long though lol. Ymir is the reason the entire story takes place in the first place. When she touched the “something” in episode 80, she was scared and was fearing for her life. She entered the massive tree as nothing more than a last-ditch effort to save herself and stumbled upon a great power. From what I can tell, and correct me if I’m wrong, but touching the essence of life, as Zeke describes it, gave her essentially the power to defy the natural laws itself. Her wish at that moment was to not die, and so the paths were born: a world where death is no threat. This is where the story basically starts, as from here on everything was already set in stone. Ymir becomes a slave to king Fritz, who exploits her powers for his own gain. Her’s is a power of such magnitude; nothing can even comprehend it. I doubt Ymir herself even does. She gets abused because of her powers, gets raped for them, and all around not having a good time. Yet despite that, Eren claims that she loved king Fritz. That despite the abuse, she couldn’t help but get feelings for him. He himself, however, admits that he doesn’t know the exact nature or reason for this love, only that it was there. He only knows that Mikasa was the key, but not more than that. This already heavily implies that for some reason Eren cannot access this knowledge. This is a crucial point in the story and forms the foundation for the ending, so I want to go a bit in depth into this claim for love and its implications. Ymir had quite the shitty life in general. We know precious little of her time before enslavement, but she was so young she probably remembers just as much of it. Hence, for basically as long as she’s known, she has been a slave, and nothing good has come out of it. When you approach her feelings towards king Fritz in this context, it starts to make sense what Eren was getting at. For all the assholery that king Fritz pulled over Ymir, he was also the only one who gave her a purpose – namely to serve him. Equally, and probably more importantly, he also gave her her own true love: her children. These are the two facets which chained Ymir. As Kenny said, everyone is a slave to something after all. Ymir more so than most. On the one hand her servitude to king Fritz, and on the other her genuine affection for her children. As we all know, Eren freed Ymir from one of her shackles in episode 80, where she finally gets to make her own choices after Eren finally finds her. She still has her other chains binding her, however, and are preventing her from doing what she really wants to do, which is to free the world from titans. Ymir sees all Eldians as her children, views the titans as a way of protecting them. So what then were these feelings Eren claimed that she had for king Fritz? Well, Mikasa answers this question in her little farewell scene with Ymir. She says to Ymir: “I think your love was nothing but a huge nightmare. The lives taken will never come back. Still, I exist because of the lives you created.” This dialogue is fascinating because it more or less confirms that it wasn’t true love. It was, if anything, a huge nightmare in which Ymir had nowhere to go. Her love for Fritz was no love. If anything, it was fear; be it fear for abandonment again, fear for remaining purposeless in life without him, or fear of losing the only person who ever gave you something to love. It was this feeling which Ymir rationalized as love, but the truth couldn’t be further from the case. She had clung to Fritz as a crutch, not seeing he was holding her back. Forgive me if I haven’t explained this clearly, as it’s obviously a tricky topic to make clear. Anyway, this is where Mikasa enters the picture. Why did she make Ymir change her outlook, what made her so special? Well for one, both were dependent on something irredeemable. Mikasa and Ymir were completely reliant on Eren and king Fritz respectively to find their purpose in life. Both were willing to go to the deepest depths to maintain this connection and to not lose grasp of it. Obviously the surrounding context differs, as Mikasa’s was a true love in contrast to Ymir, but the underlying mechanisms remain the same. Both clung to their idea of love in spite of everything going on around them. So what did Mikasa do differently? She realized that saving Eren for nothing but her own convictions was not actually love. Love is not a theater where you can choose what’s important and what isn’t. You love something or someone “in spite of,” not “because of.” Mikasa made that realization after Eren’s memories in the cabin, and never looked back. Eren tells her where she has to go to find him, and in one swipe kills him. This is where Ymir’s cognition of the future stops, if she had any to begin with. In the case that Ymir was able to see the future through the paths, this can only be done through the attack titan which ends at Eren’s death. So at this point, Ymir knew as much as Eren, and knew that Mikasa would be the end of the line. Neither knew exactly what this would entail however, which is why Ymir kept peeking into Mikasa to try and understand what her significance was. This significance is found in what is in my opinion the most beautiful still frame of the entire show: Mikasa kissing Erens head. This scene shows Ymir multiple things. Firstly, it shows that Mikasa was able to cut off Eren, and secondly, it shows that Mikasa still loves Eren in doing so. She finally learned to love Eren in spite of the things he did and instead for the person that he was; she could accept the reality that was his cutting off. Thusly, Ymir’s epiphany that follows is simple: first of all, she sees that it is indeed possible to cut off someone dear to you, and secondly that it is possible to still love that person despite what has happened. Basically, Ymir learns what true love is in this moment and realizes that her feelings for Fritz were no love. This is proven by the short scene of Ymir hugging her children and letting Fritz get impaled; she realized where her feelings lay. So, what does Ymir do in response? The same as Mikasa, albeit in a different context. She manages to cut off her children, those being the Eldians, whom she truly cares about, and in one final act of true love takes away their titan powers. This marks her maturation as a person, finally being able to let go of her past and growing from it. This is why she is depicted as an adult with her eyes visible in the scene with Mikasa. She was no longer a slave to Fritz, nor to the ones she loves.

Manga ending. Anime ending has been overwhelmingly praised.

NissanZaxima

you are great at observing and paying close attention to the details. Some people criticize the story without even understanding it, simply because they didn't get the ending they wanted, just like with every show we see.

Ice-Wallow-come

That is good to know. When the final chapter came out I remember feeling like the a lot of readers hated it but maybe it changed.

SixtySevenFrogs

That was not the general consensus at all. When the manga ended in 2021 it was more like 60% liked the ending, 20% didn't like it and another 20% hated it. With the anime finale it switched around more, with almost 90% of people liking the ending and the other 10% hating it or being indifferent to it.

Zer0

The general consensus of the manga ending is most people hated it to the point where Isayama apologized for it. I'm glad someone else appreciated the ending because I felt like I was one of the few that liked it as it tied up all of the themes neatly(Misa/Ymir cutting off their obsession, Eren admitting his fault being slave to freedom, future generation is important even if wars/conflict always continue etc.).

SixtySevenFrogs

I'm still not able to tell whether the person Mikasa marries after Eren is dead is Jean.

Anna Kyruin

There's many more insightful comments to be made, but I just wanted to say that Onyankopon crashed because it's a flying boat, it's meant for water landings not land landings. It doesn't have any landing gear.

Congrats on going through the journey! 1:21:21 "Why Mikasa" had been my unsolved question since Manga 139, 'cause I cannot grasp in what perspective did Ymir relate to Mikasa & Eren. I once thought maybe it is that she relate herself to Eren as a powerful titan holder and saw that someone (Mikasa) loved Eren, and she felt being loved too. But that doesn't really make sense because to match this criteria it didn't need to be Mikasa & Eren. Thank you for the inspiration! Also I think comparing to 'getting away' from toxic relationship, considering Ymir's satisfaction of watching them kiss in the end, how Eren convinced(?) Ymir in the path, and the timing of when Mikasa had headaches in the past, I think to sum it up the key may be like 'had been following X's will and chasing after X, but then though I still love X, I would act on my own choice and not just following X's will" 1:22:51 that's an interesting possibility! To me, the reason that it is more possible that it's by Eren is because of how he left messages to his friends. Armin, Jean, Conny 'remembered' the memories that had been erased, and since Ackerman's memory couldn't be erased, he had to leave the message to Mikasa at the last moment 1:56:49 I confess that I panicked when I heard "I want them to fuck-" berfore hearing "-ing marry" . Jesus forgive me I'm so sorry

Naej

Your breakdown changed my view of SO many scenes. You opened my eyes to symbolism that I hadn't even read into. Thank you.

At 16:30 SWS was so load that mic didn’t record sound :D Our best sniper girl Gaby is contributing 🗣️🗣️🗣️ That baby scene destroying me no matter how many times i've replayed it already. I agree that Muller a little bit off the narrative, maybe Isayma need somebody from “outside” to validate statement about breaking wheel of hate, so he injected new character, because capable ones like Magath were already dead. It seems in the ending credits where Eren and Mikasa were buried, old Armin still visiting their graves. Just like when they were kids running towards the tree, he was the last one who reached the tree 🥲 Thank you for great journey with your reactions!
